Low pig prices cause farmers to suffer losses
Although the price of live pigs in the three regions has recently recovered, the current price level cannot compensate for the previous consecutive sharp declines. The current price level is said to be much lower than the input cost, causing farmers from small households to large farms to fall into a state of loss, not daring to re-herd even though the barns are still empty.
According to Nguyen Tuan Linh - Director of Ba Farm Dak To Company Limited, the reason for the sharp drop in pork prices is the sharp increase in imported pork in recent times. This year alone, the imported frozen pork output is double that of last year, creating great pressure on domestic market prices.
Quang Ngai Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said that the sharp drop in pork prices while the cost of feed, veterinary medicine and disease prevention has not decreased has caused many households, especially small-scale farmers, to fall into losses. Pork purchasing power is also slow due to fear after the epidemics, continuing to push prices down.
Deputy Director Pham Manh Cuong said that the price of live pigs may increase again in the coming time when the supply decreases due to the epidemic causing the herd to decrease. However, in the long term, the province plans to drastically reduce the number of small-scale farming households to limit economic losses and reduce the budget burden for epidemic prevention work.
