Effective prevention and treatment of allergic dermatitis in pigs
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, many factors in the pig farming environment cause skin irritation and allergies. Farmers need to clearly understand the causes of allergic dermatitis and how to prevent it.
Associate Professor, Dr. Do Vo Anh Khoa is an expert in livestock farming. He is currently a senior advisor to the University of Forestry in Dong Nai and Chairman of the Vietnam Pig Industry Club.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Do Vo Anh Khoa, pig skin damage due to irritation in the farming environment is a common problem. Pig skin is the first biological barrier in contact with the barn environment. When exposed to urine, dirty bedding, sunlight, disinfectants, etc., pig skin is easily irritated or allergic, leading to inflammation and a decline in natural protective function.
Associate Professor, Dr. Do Vo Anh Khoa said that in intensive farming conditions or poor hygiene conditions in slaughterhouses, pig skin is often exposed to factors that can cause irritation. If left unchecked, these factors will lead to micro-disorders on the skin surface, disrupt the protective barrier and cause chronic dermatitis.
Environmental dermatitis is commonly found in areas of skin that have prolonged contact with the floor, such as the underbelly, legs, chest, and tail. Signs include: Erythema, roughness; Peeling, cracking of the skin; Pus, foul odor (when there is secondary infection); Ulceration or local necrosis in severe cases. Piglets and pregnant sows are at higher risk due to their thin epidermis and immature or weakened immune systems.
