The future of domestic exports faces fierce challenges
The discovery of many batches of Vietnamese durian exported to China containing cadmium residue and the banned substance Yellow O exceeding the permitted level is dealing a heavy blow to the billion-dollar agricultural industry. This is not only a wake-up call about food safety but also a tough test of the quality management ability, brand reputation and sustainability of the strategic agricultural export industry.
Durian was once expected to be the “king of agricultural products”, helping Vietnam narrow its trade deficit with China. International assessments predicted that this item could contribute up to 1.6% of GDP if it reached its export potential. After signing the Protocol with China, durian export turnover skyrocketed: in 2023 it reached more than 2 billion USD, in 2024 it exceeded 3.2 billion USD, accounting for nearly half of the country's total fruit and vegetable export value. However, the ambition to reach 3.5 billion USD by 2025 is threatened when a series of durian batches were returned due to violations of safety standards.
The main cause stems from uncontrolled farming. Farmers chase output, using unsafe fertilizers and chemicals, causing cadmium to accumulate in the product. At the same time, Yellow O – an industrial chemical used to dye durian peel yellow to create an eye-catching and evenly ripened appearance – was discovered in many shipments, exposing serious loopholes in the processing and preservation process.
The incident exposed the reality of the “overheated” development of the durian industry. The supply chain lacks synchronization, from the management of agricultural materials to garden cultivation and post-harvest processing. The rampant expansion of planting areas, prioritizing quantity over quality, has ignored sustainable quality standards. The management of growing area codes and packing facilities is still loose, so even a small violation can damage the reputation of the entire industry.
To salvage the situation, Vietnam needs to tighten quality control of the supply chain, raise farmers’ awareness of safe farming, and build a sustainable durian brand. Otherwise, this billion-dollar industry will find it difficult to maintain its position in the international market.
