These days, the livestock industry is entering its peak season to serve the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday in 2026, with food consumption demand projected to increase by 10-15%. Unlike last year, over the past month, the price of live pigs has increased sharply, leading to a decrease in purchasing power and causing difficulties for many small traders at wholesale markets and traditional markets.
At the South Hanoi wholesale market, a hub for wholesale and retail pork sales, many stalls were empty. Those that were still open, despite the early morning, had very little stock, mainly just pork legs and bones.
The number of customers is also much lower than before. According to vendors, the price of all kinds of meat has increased by up to 30,000 VND/kg compared to last year.
"The price is rising very quickly. We bought it from the slaughterhouse for 98,000 - 100,000 VND/kg (for the carcass). The supply is very limited and scarce, so we face many difficulties in buying it. The price increase is not due to consumer demand but mainly because the supply has decreased," said Nguyen Van Hung, a small trader at the Southern Wholesale Market in Hanoi.
At local markets, just like wholesale markets, the supply of goods is limited and customers are few and far between. Many small traders who previously mainly sold pork have now switched to selling beef as well.
At the Ha Nam livestock and poultry wholesale market, the number of pigs arriving has halved compared to before, reaching only about 1,500 per day. According to livestock associations, pork is one of the raw materials that businesses stockpile to produce many Tet holiday products. This period is the peak season for producing goods for the Lunar New Year, so the market is experiencing a supply shortage, leading to a sudden surge in pork prices.
