Pepper prices in major markets this week showed mixed trends. While most pepper varieties increased in price, only Brazilian black pepper recorded a decrease. Indian pepper prices increased both domestically and internationally. Similarly, Indonesian pepper prices also continued to increase during the week.
China has sharply increased its pepper imports. Figures from China Customs show that in the first 6 months of 2024, the country imported 4,979 tons of pepper, worth 31.95 million USD. This figure increased by 7.6% in volume and 51.5% in value compared to the same period last year.
The main suppliers to China came from three countries. Indonesia led with 2,738 tons (55% market share), up slightly by 1.1%. Vietnam ranked second with 1,653 tons (33.2% market share), up 9.1%. Brazil supplied only 416 tons (8.4%) but grew strongly by 138%. These three countries accounted for nearly 97% of total pepper imports into China.
Forecasting the last 6 months of the year, experts believe that China will continue to increase pepper imports from Vietnam. However, it is unlikely to reach the massive purchasing level as in 2023 due to strong competition from Indonesian pepper prices.
