Gender issues have been stirring up the regional sports scene recently, specifically in volleyball, after the Thai women's team lost to Vietnam, as well as the uproar at the U21 Women's Volleyball World Championship.
In a recent statement, the Director General of the Sports Authority of Thailand - Mr. Kongsak Yodmanee revealed that there will be a form of gender testing at the 33rd SEA Games.
"Athlete gender testing will depend on each sport and the regulations of the respective sports federations.
Every sport has its own rules. Some sports, such as combat sports, have clear advantages and disadvantages that require gender testing.
On the other hand, in sports where physiological factors are not a significant determinant, this test is not necessary," said Mr. Yodmanee.
Mr. Yodmanee also affirmed that athletes cannot refuse to be tested once the Sports Federation determines that gender testing is necessary at the SEA Games.
Although he did not specify which sports, Mr. Yodmanee's statement implied that martial arts and volleyball, and even football, would be subject to gender testing.
A week ago, the president of the Thai Volleyball Association (TVA) Somporn Chaibangyang also said that he would propose to the World Volleyball Federation about gender testing at the Women's Volleyball World Championship, taking place next week in Thailand.

It is not yet clear whether this proposal will be implemented, but the issue of gender testing is creating a huge wave of controversy.
Over the past decades, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and major sports federations such as World Athletics, World Aquatics... have reformed gender testing many times.
But no matter the method, controversy is inevitable. Scientists have repeatedly fought to point out the flaws in the gender testing methods chosen by the IOC.
It is still unclear how Thailand will specifically conduct gender testing.
