High-tech products "Make in Vietnam"

The first humanoid robot system completely controlled by a Vietnamese enterprise from research, design to production has shown a great step forward for domestic enterprises. With a launch time of only 6 months, it is a world record for the speed of deployment in robot technology, especially humanoid robots, which are strategic and key technology in the new scientific and technological revolution. VinMotion Chairman Nguyen Trung Quan affirmed that the company controls the entire process, from mechanics, electronics to software, and does not import the whole machine or original frame from any company.

"Every detail is developed in Vietnam. 100% from the hands of Vietnamese engineers and we are proud of that. Therefore, it can be affirmed that this live demo dance is truly a technological milestone for us to confidently deploy many robots at the same time in many practical applications in the future. These are robots serving in factories, warehouses, receptionists or supporting dangerous tasks for humans...", Mr. Nguyen Trung Quan shared.

Not only VinMotion with its humanoid robots, Vietnam also has many enterprises that can produce high-tech products. Recently, at the Vietnam - Korea Economic Forum on August 12 and under the witness of General Secretary To Lam and Korean Prime Minister Kim Min Seok, CT Group of Vietnam and an emerging drone technology company in Korea signed a memorandum of understanding to export 5,000 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Korea. According to this group, the types of transport UAVs from 60 kg to 300 kg are produced by CT UAV Company - a member of CT Group - with a localization rate of up to 85% and exclusive technology of Vietnam, highly appreciated by many countries including Korea. Being self-sufficient in semiconductor chip design technology for UAVs creates a special competitive advantage for CT UAV.

Another company, Viettel Post, is testing an autonomous delivery robot at Vinhomes Thang Long urban area (Hanoi). The robot was designed by the company specifically for the internal area, with a maximum load of 400 kg, a speed of 25 km/h and equipped with 24 electronic lockers. This autonomous vehicle is equipped with many cameras, radar, lidar, artificial intelligence (AI) voice and advanced control software. This is just one product manufactured by a unit of Viettel Group, while the parent group also has many other products such as radar, optical-electronic equipment, electronic warfare, military information, simulation training, command and control, UAV, cyber warfare, cyber security and other product groups...

It can be seen that "Make in Vietnam" high-tech products have made many strides and Vietnam is ready to participate in the technology game at a higher level.

The transformation of Vietnamese technology

Dr. Thai Kim Phung, Vice Principal of the School of Technology and Design, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, commented: The high-tech products of VinMotion, CT Group, Viettel Post... are not individual successes, but are clear evidence of an important transformation of the Vietnamese technology industry. First of all, it shows that Vietnamese enterprises have overcome the assembly and processing stages to master complex core technologies. For example, in the case of VinMotion's robot, the creation of a humanoid robot capable of performing complex movements, maintaining balance and basic interactions in 6 months is a remarkable success. This not only requires a high level of precision engineering, but also mastery of control technology, sensor systems, computer vision and AI. That shows that VinMotion has not only created a product, but has built a technological platform to develop specialized robot applications in the future.

For CT Group's UAV, the breakthrough here is the self-design of semiconductor chips and the achievement of an 85% localization rate. Chip design is a high-level development stage of the electronics industry, requiring deep research and development (R&D) and extremely high-quality human resources. Vietnam's ability to export UAVs to a demanding market like Korea is an international recognition of the quality and competitiveness of its products. This proves that we can not only do it, but also do it well and meet international standards... Dr. Thai Kim Phung emphasized: "If we look at these examples, I assess that the level and autonomy of a part of Vietnam's leading technology enterprises have made great progress. We have demonstrated our ability to master complex technologies, integrate multiple industries and create "Make in Vietnam" products that can compete fairly in the international market. These are extremely optimistic signals, showing that Vietnamese enterprises not only have aspirations but have been and are proving their real capacity to reach the world level in the field of high technology".

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thuong Lang (Institute of International Trade and Economics, National Economics University) also assessed that the modern and smart technology products that Vietnamese enterprises have demonstrated or introduced to the world recently have affirmed that Vietnam's capacity to design, manufacture and compete in high-tech products has improved significantly. The contract to sell drones abroad can be considered a milestone in the history of Vietnamese technology because it has great and important applications, from science, people's livelihood to national security and defense... We are completely confident that this is the initial manifestation of a wave of technology from Vietnamese people, made by Vietnamese people. The issues that we have cherished and aspired for a long time are now the opportunity to be revealed. It can also be said that this is the beginning for Vietnam to gradually put its name on the world high-tech map.

"In reality, Vietnam is a country with a relatively slow-growing technology industry. However, in the core technology sector in the digitalization, big data, and digital era of humanity, we are moving quite fast, possibly on par with many countries ahead of us. High-tech products such as robots, drones, artificial intelligence, big data mining, chips, etc. can help Vietnam upgrade very quickly. These products are possible thanks to Vietnam having a good foundation in human resources, mathematics, STEM, digitalization capacity, etc. With a knowledge foundation, a great aspiration, in the context of the Politburo having Resolution 57 on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation, we will certainly have more and more high-tech products Made in Vietnam," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thuong Lang confidently said.

Encouragement and motivation will create more breakthrough products.

Although it is only the first step, Mr. Vo Hoang Lien, Chairman of the Vietnam Internet Association, affirmed that this is a commendable effort. This step is necessary and will create momentum for the development of science and technology later. Previously, enterprises were not bold enough to invest in innovation and faced many difficulties due to the lack of incentive policies, the unpreparedness of the market or even suspicion and jealousy of the business community. Up to now, there has been a strong change from awareness to vision, especially the incentive policies of the Party and the State such as Resolution 57 and Resolution 68 of the Politburo on the development of science, technology and the development of the private economy have helped enterprises gain confidence and expand their business activities.

"I strongly believe in the potential of domestic enterprises to be able to produce high-tech products that are not inferior to any other unit in the world. Vietnamese enterprises are confident and see opportunities, they will do a lot; especially when the Government has many activities to promote and create a wide playing field, there will be outstanding results. We need to encourage and cheer right from the beginning of ideas and initial products. There must be an initial foundation to have breakthrough products. The current time is not only an opportunity for large enterprises but also for any individual or startup company to grow stronger and be able to produce high-tech products Made in Vietnam", said Mr. Vo Hoang Lien.

Dr. Thai Kim Phung believes that in order to have more high-tech products from Vietnamese people, we need a "three-legged stool" in which capital, technology and human resources are indispensable. Capital is considered the "blood" of all activities. However, capital is only a necessary condition. In reality, if there is an excellent team of human resources and a breakthrough idea, attracting capital (from investors, venture funds, or government policies) will become much more feasible. Meanwhile, we can take a shortcut by transferring and acquiring technology. But to truly "Make in Vietnam", we need to be able to absorb, master, improve and ultimately create new technology. "Who will do that? It is the people. Technology itself cannot develop without the brains of engineers and scientists. Thus, high-quality human resources are the starting factor, the central driving force to create both capital and technology. In addition to the above three factors, in order for human resources to fully develop their potential, we need a fourth factor, which acts as a catalyst, which is mechanisms and policies," emphasized Dr. Thai Kim Phung.

Specifically, according to Mr. Phung, it is necessary to create a favorable environment, preferential tax policies, technology incubators, state venture capital funds, a "sandbox" mechanism for new technologies, and most importantly, strictly protect intellectual property rights.

"I highly appreciate the viewpoints and orientations of Resolution 57 of the Politburo on the development of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation. This is not only an orientational document, but it has pointed out and begun to remove the inherent "bottlenecks" in our science and technology ecosystem. I see a great opportunity for Vietnam to have more high-tech enterprises in the coming time. But that is only a necessary condition, while the initiative of enterprises themselves is a sufficient condition. No matter how good the policy is, if enterprises do not mobilize themselves, they cannot succeed. Enterprises need to proactively change their mindset, dare to invest in R&D; build and attract high-quality human resources, strengthen cooperation and build ecosystems, proactively seek and conquer the market. Conquering the world market will be the clearest proof of the technological capacity of enterprises", Dr. Thai Kim Phung shared more.

If you don't dare to play, you will always be mediocre.

Resolution 57 of the Politburo and many other resolutions have stimulated innovation and self-reliance. We are witnessing unprecedented reforms, marking revolutionary changes in the thinking and actions of the entire political system. It opens up great opportunities. However, for scientific development, it must be clearly seen that the costs in scientific and technological research are not simple. Risk factors are always lurking and that is also the characteristic of scientific and technological research. Therefore, to soon make a name on the world technology map, we must accept risks, even very high risks. In return, when successful, we not only receive great benefits but also make great strides in the trend of technology development globally. What some private enterprises have done in the high-tech field such as Vingroup, FPT, CMC... is a testament to decisiveness, daring to think and daring to do. The problem is that if you do not dare to play, you will always be behind. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on and persistently invest in science and technology; invest heavily in both products, research topics and people to reap results.

Dr. Vo Tri Thanh , Director of the Institute for Brand Strategy and Competition Research

Make good use of the world's creative chain

Vietnam has the resources to accelerate digital transformation and high-tech aspirations in many fields, but the world is also in a very fast high-tech race, especially developed countries such as Japan, Korea, Europe, the US... Therefore, in addition to accelerating investment in research and development, Vietnam can buy equipment and make the most of the global technology playground to upgrade. Just taking advantage of their innovation chain, thereby creating products with added value is also very good. If the high-tech industry is invested in the right direction, Vietnam will certainly have many better and more modern high-tech products in the near future.
