Gold prices surged as the latest US labor market data released showed that initial state unemployment claims rose to 247,000 (seasonally adjusted) at the end of May 2025, according to the US Department of Labor. This figure was higher than expected, disappointing investors.
In addition, the movement of the USD also plays an important role in orienting gold prices. If the USD weakens due to expectations of lower interest rates, gold prices will be supported. Conversely, if the USD maintains its strength, gold may be under pressure to adjust. The USD/VND exchange rate in the free market is currently high, which also causes domestic gold prices to fluctuate more strongly than world gold prices.
One interesting characteristic of gold is how quickly investors get comfortable with new prices, with previous resistance levels often turning into new support levels, said Philip Newman, CEO of Metals Focus. A year ago, he expected $3,000 to be a key milestone that would trigger a wave of profit-taking. However, given the current economic uncertainty and geopolitical situation around trade, investors are not fazed by current prices.
With the domestic gold bar price increasing and the world gold price listed at Kitco at 3,402.4 USD/ounce (equivalent to about 107.5 million VND/tael converted according to Vietcombank exchange rate, excluding taxes and fees), the difference between domestic and world gold prices is about 10.2 million VND/tael.
