According to India Today on September 26, Indian-origin doctor Neil K. Anand, 48 years old in Pennsylvania (USA), was convicted of health care fraud for illegal profit. Anand was sentenced to 168 months in prison and had to pay more than 2 million dollars in compensation.
In early April, he was charged with multiple federal crimes, including conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, health care fraud, illegal distribution of a controlled substance, and money laundering.
According to the indictment, Anand prescribed more than 20,000 oxycodone pills to nine patients.

After learning he was under investigation, Anand concealed the proceeds of the fraud by transferring about $1.2 million to an account in the name of a relative.
In court, Anand and his relatives said his actions were motivated by compassion for his patients and had been misrepresented as criminal, emphasizing that he had spent his life caring for others, including treating victims of the September 11 attacks in New York City in 2001, and later serving as a doctor in the US Navy.
Judge Chad F Kenney reportedly said Anand acted out of greed and illegal profit rather than the needs of his patients.
"For the defendant, their pain was his benefit. During this time, the defendant was not focused on treating the patients," Judge Kenney added.
