"The moment I knew I won the Gold Medal, was in the top 8% of candidates with the highest scores, and was standing with my companion from the first day of high school, Than The Cong (who also won the Gold Medal at the 2024 Physics Olympiad - PV), I was overwhelmed with emotion. I shouted out loud with happiness. After all the hardships and difficulties, the day of reaping the sweet fruit has finally come...", Truong Phi Hung shared with Science and Life/Tri Thuc and Life Newspaper.
Top 8% of candidates with the highest scores
Hung came to Physics quite late compared to his friends. As a student with strength in Math, after the first semester of grade 9, Truong Phi Hung was still on the Math gifted student team. When there were 2 months left until the gifted student exam, Hung decided to change his focus to Physics, a subject that he also found… interesting.
Before their son's choice, his parents also had concerns, because time was too short, especially his mother. But before Hung's determination, as well as the plans he outlined to overcome difficulties, the family gradually felt reassured.

Not disappointing everyone's expectations, at the excellent student exam that year, Truong Phi Hung excellently won the first prize in Physics with a near-perfect score. The male student was admitted directly to Bac Giang High School for the Gifted. From this stage, he also began his journey with Physics.
In grade 10, Phi Hung won a bronze medal in Physics at the competition for excellent students in the Northern Delta and Coastal Region. In grade 11, he won second prize in the national excellent student competition. Also in this year, Hung was one of five Vietnamese students to participate in the European Physics Olympiad and won a silver medal.
In 2024, Phi Hung won first prize in the national excellent student competition. Then, at the 2024 Asia- Pacific Physics Olympiad held last June, Hung won a Bronze Medal.
After the selection rounds, Phi Hung became one of 5 representatives of Vietnam to attend the International Physics Olympiad in 2024 and excellently brought home a Gold Medal, in the top 8% of candidates with the highest scores.
Confident of getting a medal after the experiment
According to the regulations of the IPhO Council 2024, the exam consists of one theoretical exam and one practical exam. Each exam lasts 5 hours. This year's exam is considered interesting and difficult. The theoretical and practical content are closely related to real life, touching on the applications of modern science and technology.
Truong Phi Hung shared that, despite having experience in international competitions, he was still quite nervous. Learning from the experience of not doing well in the experimental test at the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) and getting the theoretical questions that were easy to score wrong, this time, the young man told himself to be calm and careful with the goal of "changing the color" of the medal.
In the future, Truong Phi Hung wants to pursue the fields of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. |
According to Hung, the three most difficult questions in the theory section were about the black widow pulsar. This is a term used to describe two planets orbiting each other, in which the lighter planet will be attracted and gradually consume matter. He did about 80% of this question.
With the practical test, which involved experiments on temperature measurement and optics, the male student did quite well, completing most of the questions. "It can be said that this is my best experiment ever. Right after finishing the test, I thought I could win a Gold Medal," Phi Hung confided.
Sharing his study tips, the “Golden Boy of Physics” said that theory is not his strong point, especially the theory of relativity with its abstract and difficult-to-understand knowledge. He often reads the theory part and then does the exercises. This helps the male student absorb the lesson better and remember the formulas more easily, instead of just reading the theory.
Self-study is also one of the secrets to being effective. Every night, Hung usually spends 3-4 hours studying by himself. Night is the time when he finds it most focused because of the quiet, so he usually starts sitting at his desk at 8pm.
Talking about his future plans, Truong Phi Hung said that he did not choose to major in Physics but wanted to pursue the fields of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. He revealed that he was very interested in this field and that it was also a good career trend.
In the future, Hung hopes to have the opportunity to study abroad in Singapore or Hong Kong (China), where there are famous universities in the field of Information Technology such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). However, the love for Physics will always be a part of him, nothing can replace it.
Mr. Tran Duy Phuong, Principal of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, said that in 2024, for the first time, Bac Giang province had 3 excellent students winning Gold Medals at the International Olympic Competition. Along with Truong Phi Hung, the other two students who won Gold Medals were Than The Cong and Truong Phi Hung, both students in the 12th grade Physics class of the school.
"The common point between you all is diligence and effort. You set goals for each stage and are determined to conquer them. The school is very proud of you," said Mr. Phuong.
The 54th International Physics Olympiad was held in Iran from July 21 to July 29, 2024. The Vietnamese national team consisted of 5 students. As a result, 5/5 students won medals with 2 Gold Medals and 3 Silver Medals.
With this result, the Vietnamese delegation is among the countries with the highest results at the 2024 International Physics Olympiad. This year, the practical exam scores of Vietnamese students have improved significantly compared to recent AphO and IPhO exams.
In 2023, the Vietnamese team won 2 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal.
