It has become a routine that in the early morning, students of Dong Tam Primary School (Vinh Yen) gather together to pick up waste paper, sweep the yard, water trees, flowers, etc. The school guides students to collect and classify waste, and clean the classroom. Through these activities, students learn how to classify waste, forming awareness and good habits towards the living environment. The school also encourages students to collect waste paper, plastic bottles, and scrap to sell and raise funds to help poor students.
To raise awareness of teachers and students about environmental protection, every year, Dong Tam Primary School has developed a plan to implement many meaningful and practical programs on environmental protection. The school has specifically deployed to each teacher the content, requirements, and criteria for a green, clean, and beautiful school; assigned responsibilities to classes to preserve and care for trees and kindergartens. The most important thing is to educate and propagate students to raise awareness of environmental protection right in the classroom, school, family, and neighborhood.
Nguyen Tien Dat, class 4A3, Dong Tam Primary School said: “Through environmental protection activities at school, I have raised my awareness of preserving the environment. My friends and I always remind each other not to litter and keep things clean… At home, I always keep my house and desk clean, and collect and sort waste.”
For preschools, schools also have many activities and measures to educate environmental awareness suitable for children's ages. During afternoon activities, teachers always spend time educating students on the habit of cleaning up at the end of the day in groups or individually, taking care of the classroom's nature corner, arranging and cleaning toy shelves... Promoting experiential activities between classes, helping children understand the benefits of trees for humans and the environment...
Besides directly educating children, propaganda work and coordination with parents in educating children about environmental protection awareness is also a highly effective work.
Not only schools, but also Youth Union and Young Pioneer organizations at all levels in the province have had many practical and meaningful activities contributing to raising environmental protection awareness among children.
Recently, the Provincial Youth Union organized competitions related to the environment such as the "Recycled fashion to protect the environment" contest with the theme "Protecting the environment is protecting our lives" and the "Creating recycled products to protect the environment" contest with the theme "The second journey of waste". The competitions have created a creative and useful playground to help children know how to classify waste and use recycled products effectively, thereby raising the sense of responsibility for environmental protection among youth, children and people.
The model of “Exchanging trash for trees” has been implemented by the Provincial Youth Union for many years and has brought practical results. Implementing the model, union members, youth, children and people have brought recyclable waste such as newspapers, old books, soft drink cans, beer cans, plastic bottles... to exchange for trees.
The model has received a great response from many union members, youth, and children and created a positive effect, spreading awareness of preventing and combating hazardous waste, actively planting trees to create landscapes, and protecting the environment for the younger generation. With that meaning, the model has been replicated to school and local union branches throughout the province.
At home, parents are the most effective educators of environmental protection awareness in children by reminding them to clean their homes and study areas, to dispose of trash in designated areas, and not to litter in public places; to use electricity and water sparingly to protect resources... Most importantly, parents must be good role models for their children to follow, then environmental education activities will be truly effective.
Raising environmental protection awareness for children is necessary, especially in the context of environmental pollution and many negative impacts on human life.
In the coming time, the Youth Union and Young Pioneers at all levels in the province and schools will continue to have practical and meaningful activities to promote and raise awareness and creativity of students and children in environmental protection activities.
