Professor criticized for saying "women will live to 100 if they give birth to 10 children"

(Dan Tri) - A Chinese professor has been criticized on social media for claiming that "women can live to 100 years old if they give birth to 10 children". He believes that women who pursue their careers often have shorter lifespans.

In late December 2024, a video of an anonymous professor making controversial remarks on Chinese social media went viral. In a talk with students, he said that "women will be blessed with a longer life if they give birth."

"Some women are successful in their careers but their life expectancy is short. Meanwhile, old women in the countryside who give birth to eight or 10 children can often live to be 90 or even 100 years old. Those old women usually do not suffer from serious illnesses," he said.

The name of the university where the professor worked was not disclosed. Multiple sources said he used to work at a hospital as a doctor, earning 300,000 yuan a year.

The professor's remarks were heavily criticized on Chinese social media, with some saying there was no scientific evidence to support his views.

"Women giving birth often face many risks. Are mothers who die during labor blessed?", one netizen was indignant.

"Why push women to have too many children? The cost of raising children is a burden that makes many parents stressed and tired. I have one child now and will not have another, no matter what the experts say," said another.

China is facing an aging population crisis while many young people do not want to get married or have children.

The country's population will begin to decline in 2022, the first decline in 60 years. By 2023, China's population will have fallen by 2.08 million; the birth rate will hit a record low of 6.39 births per 1,000 people.

Local authorities have tried various methods to tackle the problem, including cash rewards and tax cuts, but none have been effective.

Previously, Wang Xianju, a professor at Renmin University in Beijing, got into trouble after he asked a Kazakh diplomat "how to encourage Chinese women to have more children".
