There are only a few days left until the Hanoi 10th grade entrance exam. Students should not learn new knowledge or take on too much knowledge, but should practice and learn each content firmly.

According to the exam schedule of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the 10th grade high school entrance exam in 2025 will take place from June 7-9.

The foreign language test is in the form of objective multiple-choice tests. According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, there will be many test codes in one test room to ensure that no two adjacent candidates have the same test code. Candidates will take the test on the multiple-choice answer sheet and the test results will be graded by computer software.

This year is the first year that 9th grade students will take the exam to move up to 10th grade according to the new general education program, so the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has announced the structure and format of the exam early for students to review.

The English exam will consist of 40 multiple choice questions. The questions are structured at 3 levels: Recognition, Comprehension and Application. The sample exam is assessed to have new types of questions and remove some familiar types of questions from previous exams.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Nga - Teacher at Minh Khai Secondary School (Hanoi) believes that to get a high score on the 10th grade English entrance exam, students need to have a solid grasp of knowledge, but also a strategy. Learning any subject must be a long-term process of summarizing knowledge and practicing skills. Especially English, it is necessary to learn "slowly and steadily".

Ms. Nga pointed out that students should not be subjective with the test questions because the things that "test questions often trick" students into thinking are easy are actually not easy. The truth is that learning English to get a high score, especially a perfect score of 10, is not easy, even though the questions look easy.

Regarding the strategy when taking the English test for grade 10, just like other subjects, Ms. Nga said that students should not be nervous when seeing the invigilator: "Don't think it's too big, it's just an exam. When you receive the test, remember what your teachers told you: read the test carefully."

In English, even good, fair or average students can easily fall into the trap of skimming through the text and thinking it is easy. The subjective mentality of skimming through the text and seeing it as easy will “kill” the success that lies ahead of them.

“In fact, in recent exam seasons, students who praised the easy questions often lost points for making “silly” mistakes due to subjectivity. When holding the questions and seeing them as easy, think about how to get a perfect score of 10, it is never easy, try little by little, to achieve perfection in knowledge and presentation. Therefore, do not be subjective with any exam questions,” said Ms. Nga.

Ms. Nga also shared more about test-taking strategies. Students should not spend too much time on difficult questions, as time will run out when they return to easy questions. The psychological factor in the exam room is also very important to students.

Furthermore, according to Ms. Nga, in the English exam for grade 10, there will be no vocabulary limit on topics in the textbook system from grades 6 to 9. However, the questions are usually not too difficult. Students need to master common words and their word types in familiar topics such as urban/rural life, pollution, natural disasters, ... the content students have learned.

Ms. Nga also advised the students: "For the main knowledge areas, students must remember the following items: Pronunciation ed, s/es; Stress; Declarative sentences; Comparative sentences (more than, most, equal to, DOUBLE); Question words + to V".
