But one teacher has found an effective way to detect cheating from students' use of ChatGPT. This has quickly received a lot of attention from the teaching community.

How to detect student cheating effectively

Lucas Markarian, a middle and high school math teacher and TikTok creator with the handle @lucasmaths4, has amassed more than 700,000 followers through hiseducational videos.

In a recent video , Markarian shared his method for detecting students using ChatGPT: “When students submit their homework, I ask them to take a piece of paper and take a test in class. I ask them the same questions as the homework. If all the students score high on the homework but low on the test in class, there is a clear case of cheating.”

While Markarian is not against the development of AI chatbots, he is concerned about students not understanding the assignments, which he believes is the ultimate goal of education. “People who use ChatGPT write very flowery and apply the formulas I teach them,” he said. “They think they are Baudelaire, but that doesn’t make them bad people, they just aren’t smart enough to know how to cheat.”

Trust in students from teachers and parents is down

The emergence of ChatGPT has created new challenges in education, not only teachers but also parents are concerned. Although this technology is not prohibited by regulations, many parents have even punished their children for using AI to complete their homework. The reason given by these parents is that AI tools can make their children's knowledge worse, affecting their chances of studying at prestigious universities.

According to a recent survey in the US, 90% of teachers said they are more suspicious of their students than before, especially in the context of AI cheating. That has clearly created an atmosphere of tension and distrust between teachers and students.
