Parents are role models
At home, parents are the role models for their children to form the habit of reading. Parents reading books, telling stories to their children every night, choosing books with their children every week, etc., although small, have a big influence in forming a love of books in children.
As a mother and a book lover, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan (residing in My Hanh commune, Tay Ninh province), excitedly shared: “I often let my children read books, children's comics and tell them stories every night. This not only helps children practice their language skills but also creates moments of connection between parents and children. I believe that when children are exposed to books from an early age, they will form the habit of self-study, love to explore and listen better.”
Ms. Nhan also often takes her children to the library or local book fairs so that they can choose the books they like. According to her, family support is an important step in "sowing the seeds" of reading habits, thereby creating a solid foundation for children throughout their learning and growing up process.
Nguyen Hoang Thien Bao (Thanh Nhan's son), a student at Huynh Van Tao Primary School (My Hanh Commune), won the C prize in the 2025 Long An Province (old) preliminary round of the Reading Culture Ambassador Contest.
Thien Bao confided: “I love reading books, especially stories about my parents, friends, animals and the world around me. Thanks to reading books, I learn many new things.” From the pages of books, Thien Bao not only acquires more knowledge but also gradually forms the habit of observing, thinking and feeling about the world around him. The simple but meaningful stories help him understand more about family affection, friendship, love and sharing.
Thien Bao's reading habit was nurtured from reading with his mother - where each book is a bridge connecting love.
School is the foundation
The school library is a place of entertainment and provides a lot of knowledge for students.
At school, teachers not only impart knowledge but also inspire. Activities such as 15 minutes of reading at the beginning of each class, Classroom Bookshelf, Book Festival or Book Club, etc. are good “soil” for reading habits to continue to be “cultivated”. When students read, share and express their feelings about books, they will see that books not only bring knowledge but are also companions.
Hoang Nha Tran, a student at Binh Hoa Tay Primary and Secondary School (Binh Hiep Commune), said: “I often go to the school library to read books. Through reading, I learn a lot of knowledge, especially books help me a lot in my subjects.”
Reading books helps Le Nguyen Phuong Nam develop speaking and writing skills.
Le Nguyen Phuong Nam, a student of Le Quy Don High School (Long An Ward), is a prominent face in the 2025 Long An Province (old) Reading Culture Ambassador Contest, when he excellently won the A prize with the work "The Story of 10 Girls at Dong Loc Crossroads". In his second time participating in the contest, Phuong Nam made a breakthrough in the way he presented the work: transforming the story into a vivid storytelling video, combining simple narration, vivid illustrations and emotional background music. It was this creativity that helped his entry leave a strong impression on the jury, while spreading the value of national history to young people in a close and profound way.
Sharing about her passion, Phuong Nam said: “I love reading revolutionary and historical books and have participated in the Provincial Reading Culture Ambassador Contest twice. This time, I want to retell the story through film to easily touch the hearts of listeners and viewers. Reading stories and books about history makes me understand the great contributions of soldiers.”
Not only is Phuong Nam a passionate reader of revolutionary and historical genres, he is also a living example of the combination of reading culture and technology to convey meaningful messages to the community. From his love of reading, he has spread his love for his homeland, his gratitude to previous generations and inspired reading among today's youth. From the pages of books to the screen, from personal feelings to specific actions, Phuong Nam is demonstrating the active role of students in spreading reading culture in a modern, profound and inspiring way.
Sowing the habit of reading cannot be done in just one day or a short-term campaign. It is a long-term journey that requires the support of family, school and the whole society. When reading becomes a part of daily life, each page of a book will be a step to help children become more confident on the path to adulthood./.
