Ms. Phan Thi Trinh continues to tirelessly "preserve the soul" of the Vietnamese ao dai.

Few garments are as modest, refined, and yet so flattering to the graceful and delicate beauty of a woman as the Vietnamese ao dai. Having weathered countless historical ups and downs, the ao dai has become the soul of the nation, a cultural symbol unlike any other… Passionate about the ao dai since childhood, Phan Diem Trinh always dreamed of becoming a skilled ao dai tailor. However, realizing her dream was not easy due to her family's poverty. Trinh confided: “At 17, to afford tailoring lessons, my whole family, including my mother and brothers, had to save and scrimp so that I could have the opportunity to learn the trade.”

And to this day, after more than 20 years of diligent dedication to the craft, Ms. Trinh's ao dai tailoring skills are highly appreciated by customers and widely known. Ao dai tailored and sewn by Ms. Trinh's hands always retain the traditional features and "soul" of the Vietnamese ao dai. Although she has been involved in the profession for quite a long time, whenever ao dai is mentioned, Ms. Trinh's eyes still light up with happiness and passion. She always aspires to make every ao dai she tailors truly beautiful and satisfy all her customers.

Ms. Bui Thi Minh Loan, a customer of Ms. Trinh, shared: "I have had my ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) made at Ms. Trinh's shop for over 8 years, and I am very satisfied because each ao dai she makes has a beautiful, well-fitting design and is meticulously crafted with attention to detail in every stitch, evoking strong emotions in both the wearer and the observer."

Unlike the Japanese Kimono, the Korean Hanbok, or the Indian Sari, the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) doesn't require much time to put on, is simple and neat, yet still graceful and incredibly elegant. At first glance, the Vietnamese national costume may not seem as elaborate as many other countries, but in reality, the ao dai is the result of the skilled craftsmanship and perseverance of the tailor. Traditional Vietnamese ao dai has extremely strict standards, aiming to showcase the most refined details, from the choice of style, color, and fabric, to the decorative patterns and embroidery… Therefore, it demands that the tailor always be subtle and creative, but absolutely must preserve the "soul" and lines of the traditional ao dai. And Ms. Trinh is one of the tailors who has achieved that.

Every year, to help underprivileged female students have pristine white ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dresses) to wear to school, Ms. Phan Diem Trinh has donated many ao dai to disadvantaged students. These gifts are imbued with love and a desire to motivate them to excel in their studies. Skilled in her craft, Ms. Trinh has trained many students over the years, many of whom have now become skilled seamstresses. They all hold her in high regard and respect.

After completing the ao dai dresses, Ms. Trinh also regularly organizes photo shoots for her clients so they can have the opportunity to capture the most beautiful images of themselves wearing the Vietnamese ao dai. The image of girls wearing beautiful ao dai dresses strolling down the street, especially during the Lunar New Year, further enhances the love for the ao dai – the traditional attire of the Vietnamese people.

Today, the ao dai has become a source of pride for Vietnamese people, accompanying Vietnamese beauty in international beauty pageants. The unparalleled gentle and elegant beauty of the ao dai has honored not only the beauty of Vietnamese women, but also of a nation with a unique cultural identity. And ao dai tailors like Ms. Trinh are the ones who tirelessly "preserve the soul" of the Vietnamese ao dai.
