According to Business Insider , this move by Google includes further consolidation of its central AI teams. Last year, the company combined Brain — a group within its AI Research group — with DeepMind to form a new “super unit” focused on building AI models.
Now, Pichai said, the research teams that build AI models will also be merged with DeepMind. In addition, the Responsible AI team, which develops rules for developing AI safely and ethically, will also be transferred from AI Research to DeepMind.
The AI race is heating up among tech companies.
The result is a shift that puts more control under DeepMind’s head, Demis Hassabis. Before the merger last year, Hassabis ran DeepMind. After the merger, he remains front and center in the company’s push for AI.
In his speech, CEO Pichai said this change will help Google as they will “focus on building deep computing models in one place”.
Google is also merging two of its major product units. The devices and services group, which oversees hardware products like Pixel and Fitbit, will merge with the business unit that runs Android and Chrome. The two organizations will be brought together under the “Platforms and Devices” banner, and Rick Osterloh, who previously oversaw only hardware, will head the merged group. Hiroshi Lockheimer, who ran Android and Chrome, will remain at Google but run other projects across the company.
Sameer Samat has also been promoted to “President of Android Ecosystem,” working with all Android partners. He will play a key role in maintaining the firewall between the Pixel team and Android, which is designed to prevent Google from favoring its hardware over its competitors.
Meanwhile, Google CFO Ruth Porat also informed employees on the finance team that there would be a reorganization that would result in some job cuts. An employee said the message from Porat said the changes were being made as the company realigns its priorities around AI.
