Google has announced that Gemini AI users around the world can now share their custom 'Gems' – task-specific assistants – through a simplified process that integrates with Google Drive's sharing tools.
The feature launched last year, initially as part of the Gemini Advanced paid subscription, allowing users to write instructions to create AI chatbots for different scenarios.

Gemini users can package customizations and share them with others
For example, Google has launched pre-designed Gems, including learning coaches, brainstorming assistants, career guides, article editors, and programming collaborators.
Gemini users can share the AI-powered Gems they create with others, no matter where they are. According to Google's official announcement, sharing works by selecting a Gem in the management interface and clicking "Share," mimicking the access and permission model of Google Drive. Users can grant viewing or editing permissions as needed, allowing for easy collaboration and a unified workflow.
This will make Gems more accessible to more people, since not everyone uses advanced customization features. It can also help prevent people from building the same Gems as everyone else. For example, if multiple colleagues are using the same custom Gemini assistant, they can share the same resources instead of each creating their own version, which can be a little conflicting.
Google says sharing Gems could also be useful for people planning and directing family vacations, meal planning, or joint writing projects.

To share a Gem, you'll open the Gem manager on the web app and click the "Share" icon next to any Gem you've created. Similar to Google Drive, you can control who can see and use your Gems, as well as who can edit them.
After initially rolling out to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise subscribers in over 150 countries, Google announced in March that Gems is now available to everyone and can support file uploads.
Direct permission control is considered important to ensure privacy and minimize unintended data exposure. According to Google's documentation, the goal is to promote seamless teamwork without sacrificing granular control.
Analysts expect the feature to support wider adoption of Gemini AI by making custom solutions easily reusable and accessible.
As teams and businesses explore integrating AI into their routine workflows, streamlined sharing can foster more standardized approaches and accelerate the deployment of tailor-made assistants.
Future enhancements may focus on closer administrative customization and oversight based on the evolving needs of the organization.
