Hanoi temporarily suspends cultural and entertainment activities

From September 14 to 17, Hanoi will stop cultural, sports , and entertainment activities and hold a moment of silence to commemorate the victims who died in the mini apartment fire at 8:00 a.m. on September 18.

The city's request was sent to local units on the evening of September 14.

Hoan Kiem District leaders said they will stop all entertainment and cultural activities at the Hoan Kiem Lake walking street this weekend. Ba Dinh District announced the postponement of the race scheduled for the morning of September 15 to another day. Many districts have requested the suspension of sports activities at educational institutions...

Previously, at 11pm on September 12, a mini apartment building at No. 37, Lane 29/70, Khuong Ha Street, Khuong Dinh Ward, Thanh Xuan District caught fire, killing 56 people and injuring 37 others. This was the fire that caused the largest loss of life in the country in many years.

On September 13-14, Hanoi city and socio-political organizations and people carried out many activities to support the victims of the fire. The city supported 37 million VND for the families of each deceased victim, and 12.4 million VND for the injured. The families of the deceased children received an additional 5 million VND from the city's Children's Support Fund; injured children who had to be treated in hospital received an additional 10 million VND.

The city also supports students, workers, and laborers who rent or share apartments with 1.5 million VND/month for 6 months. People injured in the fire who need to be treated in the hospital will have all expenses paid. Families with children going to school will receive 5 million VND to buy books, school supplies, etc.

On September 14, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent a letter of condolences to the Party Committee, government and people of Hanoi, saying that he was very saddened to hear of the fire that had caused particularly serious consequences, killing and injuring many people. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in the apartment fire on Khuong Ha Street and asked Hanoi to seriously review and learn from experience.

On the same morning, at the Government Headquarters, before starting the Government Standing Committee conference with businesses nationwide, the Prime Minister and leaders of ministries and branches observed a minute of silence to commemorate the victims who died in the fire.

The Department of Health said that there are currently 36 victims being treated at 5 hospitals, of which 6 are in serious or critical condition. The owner of the apartment building, Nghiem Quang Minh (44 years old, residing in Cau Giay district) has been prosecuted and detained for 4 months for violating fire prevention and fighting regulations under Article 313 of the Penal Code.
