Two indicators of Vietnam's tourism industry at the bottom of the global tourism rankings

According to the 2024 WEF assessment, Vietnam's lowest-ranking index group is the Socio-economic Impact of the Tourism Industry, reaching 2.85 points, ranking near the bottom of the table at 115/119. This index group consists of 4 sub-indices, measuring the economic and social impact of the tourism and travel industry, including contribution to the economy, job creation, providing high-income jobs and gender equality in the workforce.

In this group, Vietnam has two indexes ranked "at the bottom" at 119/119 economies, which are "Tourism and Travel GDP Multiplier" - calculating the ratio between indirect and arising GDP from tourism compared to GDP directly contributed by tourism and travel; and "Tourism and Travel Employment Multiplier" - calculating the ratio between indirect and arising jobs from tourism compared to jobs directly contributed by tourism and travel.

A tourism expert explained that the two indicators mentioned above refer to the contribution of the tourism industry to GDP (measuring the level of economic impact) and the rate of indirect employment (measuring the level of social impact). The low rankings of these two indicators show that the contribution of Vietnam's tourism industry is still limited. The very small ratio between the number of indirect and direct jobs shows that the social impact of the tourism industry is not high.

"These indicators show that currently, the Vietnamese tourism workforce is mainly the group directly working in the hotel, travel, and tourist areas. The number of jobs that the tourism industry indirectly creates in other service economic sectors is insignificant; in other words, it creates few jobs or job opportunities for society, and local people do not benefit much," the expert said.

According to this expert, Vietnam was proud 2 years ago to be one of the countries with the best improvement in competitiveness in the world , according to the WEF's assessment in 2022, now Vietnam needs to accept the WEF's downgrade, from there review what has been done and what has not been done.

"It is impossible that in the same rating system, high-scoring indicators are correct while low-scoring indicators are inaccurate. The report is independent of 119 economies, so the data used for analysis and evaluation has certainly been calculated by WEF, to ensure that there are no errors due to lack of data from the countries. Therefore, the possibility of inaccurate rankings when evaluating in Vietnam is not high. Because if so, we must doubt the accuracy in even the top-ranked economies such as the US, Spain, Japan... ", the expert raised the issue.

In addition, the Vietnamese tourism industry also needs to pay attention to the Priority Level for Tourism and Travel Index (ranked 98, compared to rank 87 in 2021) and Tourism Service Infrastructure (ranked 80, compared to rank 86 in 2021). According to Resolution No. 02/NQ-CP dated January 5, 2024, the Government assigned the target for 2024 to raise the ranking of the Priority Level for Tourism and Travel Index by at least 5 levels; raise the ranking of the Tourism Service Infrastructure Index by at least 3 levels compared to 2021. The Resolution also sets the target that by 2025, Vietnam will strive to increase its ranking of the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Tourism and Travel Development Capacity (TTDI) by at least 2 levels (compared to rank 52 in 2021).
