Patient TTT, 60 years old, residing in Phu Tien village, Ky Phu commune (now Ky Anh commune, Ha Tinh province) was brought to the hospital by his family with symptoms of bleeding and discharge from the left nostril.
After examination, the doctors performed an endoscopy on the left nostril and discovered a suspected stone mass with a lot of bloody fluid. After draining all the blood, they discovered a suspected stone-like foreign object and many maggots in the nasal cavity. The patient was taken to the operating room for endoscopic surgery and removed 7 maggots, each measuring 1cm long and 2mm in diameter; at the same time, the entire stone mass was removed.
After successfully treating the maggot nest and the stone mass in the nasal cavity, the patient's health is now stable and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.
Ms. T's family said that 6 months ago, the patient had a stuffy nose, but did not go to the doctor and just bought salt water to rinse. However, the stuffy nose did not improve but got worse. 2 days ago, the patient's nose started bleeding, discharge from the left nostril so the family took her to the provincial general hospital for examination.
Doctor Le Thi Ha, Head of the Department of Ear - Nose - Throat (Ha Tinh General Hospital) said that this is a rare case due to lack of attention to hygiene, along with a pathology of a foreign body tumor in the nasal cavity. This is a favorable condition for the larvae to develop into maggots. In addition, the patient is also subjective, not paying attention to the pathology when the first abnormal symptoms appear, so it is discovered late when the eggs have developed into maggots.
