Previously, at 11:22 a.m. on May 20, patient NTD (residing in Hai An district, Hai Phong city) was hospitalized with half of his left hand severed due to being cut by a metal cutting machine while working.
Upon admission, the hospital immediately mobilized a team of highly specialized doctors to coordinate emergency first aid, pain relief, anti-shock, antibiotics, tetanus vaccination, and proper preservation of the severed limb.
The surgery lasted continuously for 10 hours, going through many complicated stages including: cleaning the wound, fixing the bone, connecting blood vessels, nerves, tendons and muscles, and reconstructive surgery.
The surgical team was divided into two groups, each in charge of the wrist and the severed limb, performing microsurgery with active support from the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department.
After 10 hours of continuous surgery, the patient's hand turned pink and warm again, the fingers showed signs of life and could initially move.
According to Dr. Do Manh Thang, Director of Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, surgery to reattach severed limbs is one of the most difficult techniques, requiring high expertise, modern microsurgical equipment and close coordination between specialties.
Currently, the patient's health is stable, alert, the hand is warm and pink and the fingers show good signs of life.
Doctors recommend that when an accident occurs where a limb is severed, people need to quickly provide first aid to stop bleeding at the stump tip, and properly preserve the severed limb by wrapping it in sterile gauze or a clean towel, putting it in a sealed plastic bag, and placing it in an ice box (avoid letting the limb come into direct contact with ice).
At the same time, quickly transport the victim to a medical facility specializing in microsurgery for timely treatment, increasing the chance of successful reattachment.
