Hai Phong: Criticism of the Department of Construction and ferry operators for refusing to serve passengers leaving Cat Ba Island

On September 10, information from the Office of the Hai Phong City People's Committee said that the leaders of the City People's Committee have just criticized the leaders of the Department of Construction and the Hai Phong Waterway Traffic Assurance Joint Stock Company for allowing passengers to be refused to board the ferry leaving Cat Ba Island.

Previously, on the afternoon of September 7, although the number of passengers and vehicles wanting to leave Cat Ba Island (Cat Hai Special Zone, Hai Phong City) was still very large at the ferry terminal, the ferry operator of Hai Phong Waterway Traffic Assurance Joint Stock Company refused to transport them, causing the vehicles and passengers to be stuck on the island overnight, and could not reach the mainland until the morning of September 8.

The incident has made passengers, especially those from far away, extremely upset, because the incident happened on Sunday afternoon, many people had finished their vacation and needed to leave the island to start a new work week.

While the operating hours for the day are still available, the reason given by the ferry operator for refusing service because "the daily quota of trips had been exhausted" is somewhat irresponsible.

In response to the tourists' complaints, the Hai Phong City People's Committee established a working group led by Permanent Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Le Anh Quan to inspect and verify the incident.

Through inspection and verification, Vice Chairman Le Anh Quan severely criticized the leaders of the Department of Construction and Hai Phong Waterway Traffic Assurance Joint Stock Company for allowing the above situation to occur, causing difficulties for people and tourists, negatively affecting the image of Hai Phong City.

The City People's Committee also assigned the Department of Construction to direct the absolute safety of waterway traffic. The suspension of operations must comply with regulations on sea bans, bad weather, and timely and public information.

Service units must proactively increase trips and vehicles when travel demand increases; publicize schedules, transport capacity, and suspension criteria. At the same time, relevant units and individuals are required to review their responsibilities and report to the City People's Committee before September 13.

Along with that, the Standing Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee requested the People's Committee of Cat Hai Special Zone to direct accommodation establishments to coordinate in providing ferry schedule information to residents and tourists; request contractors to urgently complete and put into use the construction, renovation and expansion of Dong Bai - Cai Vieng Ferry Terminal and auxiliary items before September 20.
