Brother Printer Company Accused of Using “Anti-Consumer” Tricks

VOV.VN - Brother printers and multifunction devices have long been popular for allowing users to use third-party ink without any problems.

However, social networks have recently been filled with information stating that Brother has changed its policy on its printers, causing users to worry about the possibility of using non-genuine ink cartridges.

Specifically, on March 3, popular blogger and electronics repair rights activist Louis Rossmann accused Brother of being an “anti-consumer company.” He came to this conclusion after analyzing Brother’s new software, claiming that it has a feature that blocks the use of third-party toner cartridges and color calibrations.

Rossmann warns that Brother devices may stop working properly after updating their firmware if non-genuine cartridges are installed. He recommends that users disable the device's Internet access or turn off automatic updates.

Brother confirms it does not block third-party ink

In response to these allegations, Brother has issued an official response, stating that “Brother software updates do not block the use of third-party inks in our devices.” The company also stressed that it cannot guarantee print quality when using non-genuine supplies and recommends that users use genuine Brother inks and cartridges for optimal performance.

Brother called the reports of reduced printer quality or blocked functionality “misleading.” The company is “actively addressing the source of these false claims to ensure customers have access to accurate information.”

As the printing industry struggles, many manufacturers are looking to maintain revenue from selling genuine supplies and services, which has some consumers wondering about the transparency of policies from companies like Brother.
