On the afternoon of July 9, Ms. Ngo Thi Sam - Chairman of the People's Committee of Dak To Commune, Quang Ngai - said that the authorities had just discovered many ancient tamarind trees along Provincial Road 672 with the bark peeled off on large branches. The row of ancient tamarind trees is a famous check-in spot, so many people are worried, afraid that the trees will die.
Ancient tamarind trees in Quang Ngai have their bark peeled off.
The incident was discovered the same morning. Immediately, Dak To Commune People's Committee sent officials to inspect and verify.
The results determined that two households admitted to peeling the bark off the large branches of the ancient tamarind trees. The reason given was that the tamarind tree canopy was too large, covering most of the rice fields below, causing the rice to grow poorly and reducing productivity.
The two households said they only wanted the tree to reduce its shade, so they peeled off the branches that extended into the field to get more light for the rice, but had no intention of destroying it.
"People's actions come from the desire to improve crop yields, but have unintentionally affected ancient trees.
The commune sent forces to apply medicine to heal scars, stimulate roots and bandage the tree's wounds," said Ms. Sam.

Hundred-year-old tamarind trees, a place that holds many memories
The row of ancient tamarind trees along Le Duan Street (Provincial Road 672), connecting Dak To and Kon Dao communes (Quang Ngai), is considered one of the most ancient and unique rows of trees in the Central Highlands.
Dozens of majestic tamarind trees over a hundred years old have become the green symbol of this land.
According to locals, these tamarind trees were planted during the French colonial period to provide shade and protect the road from landslides.
Through many seasons of sunshine and rain, the tree trunks have become huge, with canopies spreading out like giant umbrellas, covering the entire road, making this place known as a "green tunnel" in the heart of the mountains and forests.
During the blooming season, clusters of pale pink tamarind flowers bloom all over the tree canopy, creating a romantic scene, attracting many young people to check-in.
Every sunny afternoon, the road becomes cool thanks to the shade of the trees, a place where people stop to rest, students gather to play, and is also a childhood memory for many generations.
Not only having landscape value, the row of tamarind trees is also a historical vestige, associated with many ups and downs of this remote border land.
In the midst of the concretization era, this place still retains its pristine and poetic beauty, an ideal destination for those who love nature and want to find peaceful memories of the old Central Highlands.
