Millions of people suffer mental trauma after natural disasters and wars

In recent years, the world has witnessed continuous wars, conflicts, natural disasters, climate change and epidemics. In addition to the heavy material losses, the spiritual consequences that people have had to bear are also enormous.

In that context, mental health care in disasters is considered a key factor, helping each individual and community stabilize their lives and recover from the crisis. The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) said so on World Mental Health Day October 10.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , each year millions of people are directly or indirectly affected by disasters and emergencies, of which nearly a third suffer serious mental health impacts. About 22% of people who have experienced war or crisis within 10 years are at risk of developing disorders such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). or other mental disorders.

To protect mental health and support recovery from a crisis, experts recommend that everyone take proactive self-care measures and seek support when needed.

First, it is important to accept and share your feelings . Acknowledging fear, sadness, or loss is a natural reaction after a disaster. Sharing your feelings with a loved one, friend, or mental health professional can help reduce stress and create a sense of understanding and safety.

Monday, Maintaining social connections plays a big role in mental health. Staying in touch with family, neighbors, or community groups helps avoid feelings of isolation and builds shared confidence and emotional strength.
