Right from the first poem, the true face of “Ageless Love” appeared through four narrative verses: “No longer young, but love is ageless/ Even though our hair is gray, we still sulk/ No longer young, but love is frivolous/ After a hundred years, we are still afraid of losing each other...”.
Reading these verses, it becomes even clearer: The nature of love, fundamentally, is not shared, does not change much over time, and in Hanh Mai's words, it is "The feeling rises like waves hitting the shore". The poem is the highlight of the collection of poems and it is not by chance that the author chose it to name the entire collection.
After “Ageless Love”, in “Feather Love”, love is turned into “missing love” or “missing love”. The poem begins with a question: “Long time no see/ Do you miss me?”, then “in the vastness of life” in the situation: “This afternoon at a roadside cafe/ I sit alone” to the point that “The sadness and joy at the bottom of the cup/ I sit and sip”, suddenly there is a strange association with interesting interaction and mutual generation: “You are like the wind/ Wandering in the sky/ I become a drop of water/ Evaporating with you”.
In the collection of poems, Hanh Mai also has two strange associations. Those are “Holding a kite” and “Candle”. These are two experiences of Hanh Mai. If “Holding a kite” is good in the detail: “Pulling the kite string in the clouds/ I sit on the ground holding the string... holding the kite”, then “Candle” is good in the whole. The material that makes up a candle consists of a candle and a string in the candle body, only when both elements are complete can a candle be made. “If you are a scented candle”, then I am “the thread worn inside”, and when “The fire of love suddenly burns/ We melt until there is nothing left”. From something left to nothing left, it seems to be over but it is not over. Because when there is nothing left is when the fire of love burns brightly, and the best thing about fire is destruction but also creation, birth by destruction, destruction to birth, as Nietzsche - a German philosopher believed.
In the lục bát genre, Hạnh Mai has memorable poems: “Sometimes I put down the machine and stay silent/ To hear my heart ringing”, “You go to have fun in the ephemeral world/ I wrap up the springs waiting for you”, “You sow a little indifference/ But in me a shore of love dies”, “Eating alone is also lonely/ The chopsticks mismatch to pick up a piece of sadness to chew”...
In the poem “Before the Court Door”, Hanh Mai has two very poignant and very humane six-eight verses when talking about a love that must be broken: “Love is a fleeting thing/ Keep it forever just the part that is not the same”. In “Ru anh”, with just two six-eight verses, Hanh Mai has expressed her wholehearted devotion to love, because love is very impressive with an equally impressive way of speaking: “I lull the water to flow, the duckweed drifts/ Even if we run aground, we are still the same”. In “Unseasonal Storm”, the love between husband and wife seems to be preserved in an inherent way, even if they are angry with each other, forgiveness is still greater than anything: “Then the nose is sore/ Pick up the cup of water... fill it up more than before”.
Remember, for poets, six-eight poetry is easy to write but difficult to write well. Being too dependent on form and rhyme can sometimes lead to straying from the idea and content. The above six-eight verses show that writing six-eight poetry is a forte, suitable for Hanh Mai's soul and personality.
The poetry in “Ageless Love” is the poetry of a woman with a strong life and personality. Sometimes, she has a very strange desire: “In this life, I will be a good wife/ In the next life, I ask to change to be a husband”. In poetry, creative personality is very important. That is why scholar Phan Ke Binh, during his lifetime, once ranked personality as the most important, followed by ideology and the ability to cultivate language for each person when writing poetry.
