New Kingdom
Two nights of concerts Sobin Soobin Hoang Son's concert in Hanoi was a resounding success, with enthusiastic support from approximately 16,000 fans. Some suggested that he should hold the event at a larger venue to match the number of his supporters. Some fans proudly claim to belong to the largest fandom in Vietnam, although this has not been verified. In any case, by naming his fan community "Kingdom" and referring to his fans as princesses and princes, Soobin Hoang Son has implicitly declared his current status in Vpop.
While in the past, the rise to power or self-proclaimed status of some "kings and queens" included an element of luck (or what is known as "divine favor"), today the position of some top stars is determined by fate. build Based on merit. They all went through formal training, and some even studied music from a young age.
The era when audiences craved handsome and beautiful idols, even if their singing was a little mediocre, was over. Now that audiences have more choices, to succeed and gain recognition, artists should first become all-around talents. Naming his debut concert "All-Rounder" is also a way for Soobin to declare his new status in the industry. V-pop. He doesn't need to use one skill to compensate for another; he's confident he can do well in any field.
If we were to name an artist with a truly outstanding career in many aspects so far, it would still be My Tam. She was the first Vpop singer to hold a solo concert in a stadium. To achieve this, My Tam had to demonstrate her all-around talent; besides singing, she could also compose, play two musical instruments, and dance. My Tam's uniqueness doesn't just lie in her all-around abilities (many artists could cultivate such skills if they wanted to), but also in her awareness of trends and her ability to anticipate market demands.
Soobin Hoang Son is also on track to pursue a similar career. Coming from a family of musicians, Soobin studied the zither from a young age and earned a degree in jazz piano from the Conservatory. On stage, he demonstrates his instrumental skills as a solo artist, not just using the instrument to complement his vocals.
Of course, Soobin is not the first singer to play the zither and piano well. Before him, there was Ho Hoai Anh. Bao Lan They both graduated from the Conservatory of Music with degrees in the zither. Even earlier, in the revolutionary music genre, People's Artist Thái Bảo and Meritorious Artist Đăng Dương were also trained in the zither. And occasionally they incorporated the zither into vocal performances, but they belonged to a different market segment.
Bao Lan once performed on stage with the band Nam Dong Ke using the zither, but has since found solace in teaching. Ho Hoai Anh is another case that could have achieved a similar feat to Soobin, but it seems he was born a little too early. In Ho Hoai Anh's time, the market needed musicians and producers, while Ho Hoai Anh already possessed the qualities to meet these demands. As a result, he temporarily set aside his singing talent. And now, it's unlikely he'll have the opportunity to return to the stage as a singer.
If the art of playing the zither (dan bau) sees a surge in young people learning it in the future, it will partly be thanks to Soobin. He has successfully bridged the gap between music of the older generation and music for the youth.
Circumstances create stars.
It can be seen that the models of artists are not only formed from the subjective desires of each individual but are also indirectly determined by market demands. The emergence of the diva group and their affiliated singers indicated that Vietnamese music needed a generation of singers with distinctive voices for light music, separate from traditional, academic singing styles. The quickest way was to reflect the techniques and image of the European and American divas of that time, of course, while still being Vietnamese-ized. And Vpop also borrowed the title of diva for female singers who rose to the top at that particular time.
Soon after, the market shifted to welcoming singers with good looks and who were willing to dance. But that was the time of beautiful Singing doesn't last long. The internet has opened doors, allowing artists to learn more from the outside world, and so can audiences. If domestic artists can't meet these new demands, naturally audiences will favor international stars.
During the period when singer-songwriters were a novel concept in the market, numerous controversies surrounding plagiarism erupted. It seems that some artists, in their attempts to impress and meet the new demands of the market, took shortcuts and released compositions lacking their own unique style.
When the number of singers who can play instruments and compose their own songs became large, that's when the Sing My Song competition came to the forefront. Naturally, the organizers must have foreseen the potential of the contestants to launch this format. Similarly, when Rap Viet held auditions, it meant that rap music had already gained market recognition and many rappers had become famous.
And after artists have honed their talents to conquer variety shows that attract tens of thousands of viewers, shows like "Beautiful Sister Riding the Waves" and "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" immediately appear. These programs are like an official announcement to the audience that the era of all-around artists has arrived. The organizers seem to be saying: Artists only need to hone their talents; we'll take care of the rest.
Even at their peak, no diva had the power to export Vietnamese music. Today, we are witnessing the next generation fulfilling this unfinished dream, as exemplified by My Anh – the "firstborn" of diva My Linh and musician Anh Quan. This young artist is fully equipped with the necessary skills to target the international market. This may be a calculated move, but it's more likely that, having been born and raised in an international environment, My Anh naturally has an outward-looking inclination. It's not that she's neglecting the domestic market.
Following the consecutive successes of stadium-scale performances, Vpop audiences are now familiar with artists who know everything. If an individual doesn't yet possess all the necessary elements to shine, a band will be formed. In a formulaic band, alongside members capable of songwriting and producing, there are also those who are simply beautiful and famous, regardless of their singing ability. Of course, this model is still in its experimental stage. The emergence of young, beautiful artists who are also skilled singers, dancers, and instrumentalists is only a matter of time. And investors won't sit idly by; they will proactively open training centers to quickly reap the rewards from this new generation of artists. The Kpop-style trainee model was introduced to Vietnam through programs like "All-Round Rookie."
The artists already in the profession immediately recognized the problem. Those who already had singing voices and songwriting abilities immediately started taking dance lessons, and even underwent cosmetic surgery to adapt to market demands.
While artists of two decades ago had to compromise their abilities (sacrificing their vocals to do behind-the-scenes work) to adapt to the market, today's artists tend to strive for all-around excellence. Perhaps they appreciate their own talents more. But it's also because the music industry has become more professional; all aspects of production and organization have been perfected, eliminating the need for performing artists to simply fill in for the role.
