Ho Chi Minh City defender elbows opponent in the face in V-League

Ho Chi Minh City's Nguyen Thanh Thao escaped a red card despite elbowing Ha Tinh 's Nguyen Van Hanh straight into the face in round 8 of V-League 2023-2024.

In the second minute of extra time in the second half, Nguyen Thanh Thao was marked by Van Hanh while waiting for his teammate to throw the ball in. The defender of Ho Chi Minh City Club got angry and elbowed his opponent in the face with his left elbow. Referee Do Thanh De had a good viewing position but only gave Thanh Thao a yellow card.

The match did not have VAR so the referee could not review the situation. Afterwards, the defender born in 1995 missed the chance to equalize for Ho Chi Minh City Club. At the end of the match, Thanh Thao and Van Hanh got into a verbal fight, forcing players from both sides to intervene.

Thanh Thao's behavior is unlikely to avoid a penalty. The tournament organizer, Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF), will wait for a report from the match supervisor, then make a disciplinary proposal to the Vietnam Football Federation's Disciplinary Board.

The match at Thong Nhat Stadium on the evening of December 26 was boring in terms of technicality, but there were many fouls. Ho Chi Minh City played disjointedly despite being in good form with two wins and two draws in the last four matches. As a result, they conceded a goal in the 67th minute from Dinh Tien's shot. Ha Tinh thus had their first victory in the 2023-2024 V-League, ending a streak of 17 consecutive matches without a win in the tournament (which lasted from last season).

VAR has been applied in V-League since the second phase of the 2023 season, but it has not been able to be deployed from Ha Tinh to the South. A representative of VPF said that the unit only has two VAR vehicles and is waiting for FIFA to support two more vehicles so that it can be deployed in all matches of the Night Wolf 2023-2024 national championship.
