Ukraine receives batch of 'decommissioned' tanks from Australia
Australian media reported that the country is considering transferring a batch of decommissioned M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian and US governments are considering the possibility of sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
“ Ukraine could soon receive Abrams tanks, with the Australian and US governments considering handing them over to Kiev forces ,” the Sydney Morning Herald wrote.
It is known that the process of transferring M1A1 Abrams tanks from Australia to Ukraine involves many steps. It starts with comprehensive coordination between the Australian and US governments, because these tanks are manufactured and carry American technology.
Accordingly, Canberra must secure approval from Washington before sending the tanks to another country. If approved, the next step is to resolve the issue of transporting the tanks to Ukraine.
Decommissioned tanks may undergo modernization before shipment, including technical or other modifications to suit Ukrainian battlefield requirements. In addition, Ukrainian soldiers will need to undergo training to operate these tanks.
According to Australia, the above batch of tanks are 59 M1A1 Abrams purchased from the US in 2004 for $340 million and will be decommissioned by July 2024. These combat vehicles will be replaced by the improved version M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams.
Ukraine has not commented on the information.
