Top schools have no records
This school year, Ho Chi Minh City will recruit an additional 2,340 students to public grade 10 schools to ensure places for students, especially in suburban areas. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training hopes that this decision will help reduce enrollment pressure and create more opportunities for students who fail to get into public schools.
However, in reality, the additional recruitment seems to be not very promising. A leader of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School informed that although the school recruited up to 80 students and the deadline for receiving additional recruitment applications has passed, the school has not received any valid applications, meaning there are "no" candidates.
In the past few days, 5 parents came to the school to submit their applications, however, after comparing the admission requirements, all 5 cases did not meet the requirements, so the school could not accept them.

Explaining the reason for not being able to recruit students in this additional round, the leader said that most of the students admitted to Nguyen Thuong Hien High School were also admitted to the High School for the Gifted under Ho Chi Minh City National University. In the end, they chose to study at other schools, leading to many vacant positions. Meanwhile, other students who wanted to enter the school did not meet the requirements.
The situation at Phu Nhuan High School, Tran Dai Nghia Secondary - High School, and Le Quy Don High School is also not very optimistic. Although they are top schools, the dream places of many students, these schools are still empty-handed in recruiting.
Mr. Tran Cong Tuan, Principal of Phu Nhuan High School, said that the unit could not recruit any students, even though it needed 20 more positions.
“There are very few students who are eligible to apply in this round. Students who were admitted in the first round but did not enroll were either because they chose to study abroad, take the exam to “experience” and then return to private schools, or they chose a choice that was too far from their place of residence and could not attend school,” said Mr. Tuan.
When asked whether next year's admission season will consider the option of enrolling more than the quota in a controlled manner to "make up for" the number of students who are admitted but do not enroll, the leaders of the above schools all have the same opinion: The schools do not dare to recruit more than the quota because they have to ensure that they are in line with the current capacity of the teaching staff and facilities.
"The enrollment plan is built in advance and will have a post-audit process, so we only dare to recruit according to actual capacity," emphasized the leader of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School.
Suburban schools also lack candidates.
At high schools in suburban areas, although the admission score only ranges from 11 to 15 points, it still fails to attract candidates.
Mr. Le Phu Hai, Principal of Da Phuoc High School, said that this year the school needs to recruit up to 169 additional students. However, although the minimum score is only 10.5, only 2 students have submitted applications. The situation at Phong Phu High School is not much better as the school is still short of 207 students, but only more than 10 students have submitted applications.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa Hue, Principal of An Nhon Tay High School, informed that the school has just received additional registration applications from 6 students, while the school is still short of 100 students. The same situation is also happening at many other high schools such as Trung Lap, Nguyen Van Tang,...
According to school representatives, the main reason is that this year the number of students who failed all three of their choices to enter public grade 10 has decreased significantly, to only about 6,000 students. Meanwhile, many students have proactively chosen to study vocational training, transfer to the regular education system or enroll in private schools.
HCMC: What conditions do students need to participate in additional 10th grade recruitment?
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training stipulates that students who want to participate in additional public grade 10 enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year must not be admitted to any of their wishes. At the same time, the total score of the 3 subjects Math, Literature and Foreign Language (plus priority points, if any) must be equal to or higher than the standard score of the first wish of the school they want to consider.
Students who apply directly to a high school that has a shortage of applicants are not allowed to change schools after submitting their application. In case there are many candidates with the same score, causing the number of successful applicants to exceed the quota, the school will adjust to ensure that there are no over-enrollments.
The additional list of successful candidates will be announced tomorrow (August 8), and the reception of candidates will be held at the same time.
