After more than 1 year of implementation, the model of raising deer for velvet in Quang Son commune, Lap Thach district has initially brought high economic efficiency. Exploiting local resources and labor; products have high selling prices, are favored by consumers, raising deer for velvet is a potential economic model, opening up opportunities for local people to get rich.
Raising deer for velvet, Mr. Do Manh Hung's family, Quang Son commune, Lap Thach district earns a profit of 170 million VND/year.
After graduating from Vinh Phuc College of Economics and Technology, Mr. Do Manh Hung, Quang Cu village, Quang Son commune, worked as a veterinarian and supplied animal feed to many farms in Thai Nguyen province. The job helped him approach many animal husbandry models and realizing that the model of raising deer for antlers brought high economic efficiency, Mr. Hung cherished the idea of bringing the model back to develop locally.
Mr. Hung spent 1 year working at a deer farm in Thai Nguyen province to learn and research how to build barns, learn about deer habits, care methods, antler cutting techniques...
In 2023, Mr. Hung returned to his hometown and invested 300 million VND to build barns and buy 10 breeding deer; currently his family is the household raising the most deer in Quang Son commune. During his time raising deer, he continued to learn and study many deer raising models in other provinces to improve his knowledge and experience.
Mr. Hung said: “Raising deer is not too hard, but for deer to grow well, we must ensure clean barns and good disease prevention. Deer feed mainly on vegetables, grass, fruits, starch... all of which are local agricultural products, so the cost of feeding deer is not high. After 1 year, my family earned a profit of 170 million VND from the model of raising deer for velvet. Currently, I have expanded the barns and plan to invest in increasing the number of deer to 20.”
Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet is also one of the households in Quang Son commune with high income from raising deer for velvet. Mr. Viet shared: “Currently, my family raises 1 deer for breeding and 4 deer for velvet. I always ensure the requirements for care, feeding and disease control, so the deer herd develops well.
To help the deer herd grow healthily, get quality antlers and regenerate on time the following year, I have to monitor the antlers' growth cycle. The antlers are ready to be cut 40-50 days after regrowth.
Normally, after about 6 months of maturity, mature deer can harvest the first batch of velvet and harvest twice a year. If well cared for, each deer can harvest 1.2 - 1.5 kg of velvet/year. With the current selling price of 20 million VND/kg of velvet, my family earns a profit of 15 - 17 million VND/animal/year.
Realizing the potential of the velvet deer farming model, since 2023, many households in Quang Son commune have boldly invested in building barns and buying breeding deer. To support each other in raising deer effectively, in June 2023, deer farming households in the commune established the Viet Hung Deer Farming Cooperative. To date, the cooperative has 20 members, raising nearly 40 deer, including deer for velvet and breeding deer.
Since its inception, the Board of Directors of the Cooperative has organized tours for members to learn experiences and techniques in raising deer in many provinces such as Thai Nguyen, Ha Tinh, etc. At the same time, it has focused on finding and developing markets for deer antlers.
Cooperative members have shared and supported each other in deer farming techniques, deer care methods, etc. The cooperative also has veterinary staff responsible for disease prevention and control for deer and technicians responsible for cutting deer antlers.
After 1 year of operation, the cooperative has harvested and supplied nearly 40 kg of deer antlers to the market, earning nearly 800 million VND. After deducting expenses, deer raising households all made a profit, some households earned hundreds of millions of VND. Currently, the cooperative has a plan to develop members and expand the market to improve the efficiency of this potential economic model.
Vice Chairman of Quang Son Commune People's Committee Nguyen Anh Tuan said: "Since the beginning of 2023, the model of raising deer for velvet in the commune has attracted the attention and investment of many people. Up to now, most households raising deer have joined the Viet Hung Deer Raising Cooperative.
After more than 1 year of establishment, Viet Hung Deer Breeding Cooperative has been operating effectively, all members have income. The commune government always creates favorable conditions, encourages and supports households to borrow capital to invest in raising deer for velvet to develop the economy, and get rich legitimately on their homeland.
