Dortmund had a two-point lead over Bayern Munich in the standings ahead of the final round of the 2022-23 Bundesliga on May 27, but they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Mainz, meaning Bayern Munich took the top spot to win the title on goal difference. Coach Terzic stood stunned after the final whistle in tears as Dortmund fans chanted the name of their native coach.
Coach Terzic cried when Dortmund unfortunately lost the championship
"You can see how difficult and brutal this sport we love is," said coach Terzic, adding "it's extremely painful - a bad end for us this year".
Dortmund have received support from Bayern Munich captain Thomas Mueller, who celebrated his side's 11th consecutive title and his 12th Bundesliga title. "I'm not sorry for being champions and we're happy about that, but when you think about the others, I feel a little sorry. Even if they don't want or need to hear it. I'm not trying to sound big-hearted or anything, but it's difficult for them," Muller said, expressing his sympathy for the Dortmund players.
Dortmund still receives support from fans despite missing out on the championship in the final round
"It's going to be hard to digest and it will take a few days," said captain Mats Hummels, the only Dortmund member to have tasted Bundesliga glory in the past. Dortmund midfielder Emre Can put it simply: "We gave everything as a team but it didn't happen (to win the title). We wanted it but in the end it didn't happen."
Dortmund led the table four times this season, but each time they regrettably dropped points and let Bayern Munich regain the top spot.
