In particular, the Bulgarian strategist helped the Thanh team win the National Cup for the first time in history.
After impressive performances with Thanh Hoa, Coach Popov received many attractive offers from Asian teams, including Vietnam.
However, this coach said he refused all of them to continue working with Thanh Hoa.
“I turned down several offers from Asian clubs. For example, my old club in Oman, a team in the Saudi Arabian Second Division and Thai League 1. I wanted to complete my mission with Thanh Hoa. I do not regret this decision.
At the end of the season, I received 3 offers from V-League teams. However, I still have a contract with Thanh Hoa Club. The team wants me to stay and I appreciate this," said Mr. Popov.
Under the guidance of the coach born in 1976, Thanh Hoa has become a team with disciplined and enthusiastic playing style.
Despite an impressive start to the 2023 V-League, due to a thin squad, the yellow team ran out of steam at the end of the season and only finished 4th overall.
However, coach Popov still feels proud of what he and his students have done.
“We played great football and we deserved a trophy. The players deserved it for their efforts.
Thanh Hoa Club tried their best, even in the matches we didn't win, the players still played energetic football.
“Failure is part of the game, you can’t always win. The important thing is to always try your best and never give up,” Mr. Popov continued.
