Coach Ishii explains Thailand's defeat against Turkmenistan

After losing 1-3 to Turkmenistan in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on June 10, Thailand head coach Masatada Ishii admitted the difficulties his team encountered against a well-organized opponent with high connection in playing style.

Thailand national team head coach Masatada Ishii is facing great pressure.

"Turkmenistan has a clear and coherent way of playing in all aspects. That makes it impossible for us to impose our game. They have 8-9 players from the same club, so they understand each other very well and coordinate well. This is the factor that makes the difference in the match," the Japanese coach shared after the match.

Despite conceding an early goal, coach Ishii still believes that Thailand followed the tactics set out in the first half and were not completely outclassed.

“We still kept our style of play, but Turkmenistan’s defense was solid and very difficult to penetrate. I don’t think the early goal was due to a tactical problem,” he emphasized.

One of the notable questions was the omission of midfielder Benjamin Davis from the starting lineup. Explaining this decision, coach Ishii said: “Benjamin is a player with ability and fighting spirit, but in terms of position on the field as well as connection with teammates, I think there are other players more suitable for today's match.”

When asked to compare the loss to Turkmenistan with the previous victory over Sri Lanka, the 58-year-old strategist said that it was impossible to put these two matches on the scale.

“Each team has a different playing style, and today’s match was played on artificial turf. This is a factor that significantly affects the performance of the players, and is something we need to handle better,” Mr. Ishii stated.

This defeat puts Thailand under a lot of pressure in the race for a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup. Coach Ishii and his players will need to quickly improve their performance if they want to keep their hopes alive in the ongoing qualifying campaign.
