According to SCMP , Huawei is making great strides with its HarmonyOS operating system in the Chinese market, having shipped more than 103 million smartphones running the operating system, according to new data from Canalys . In addition, the giant also launched 21 million tablets using HarmonyOS, bringing the total number of devices by the end of 2024 to more than 124 million.

Notably, nearly half of these were shipped last year alone. Specifically, Huawei sold 46 million smartphones and 10.5 million HarmonyOS tablets, reflecting the rapid transition from Android to the company's own operating system.

After being blacklisted by the US in 2019 due to national security concerns, Huawei began to push forward with the development of HarmonyOS as an alternative to Android. This operating system will be officially deployed widely from 2021.

Not just stopping at mobile devices, in May, Huawei expanded HarmonyOS to the personal computer sector with the first two laptops running this operating system. The move was made after the company expired its license to use Microsoft's Windows, a platform that accounts for about 70% of the global PC market share and 80% in China, according to Statcounter .

According to Canalys , the launch of the HarmonyOS PC marks a strategic step forward for Huawei in its efforts to become technologically self-sufficient. Analyst Emma Xu said it was a “leap forward amid global technological constraints,” highlighting a key moment in Huawei’s long-term goal of building an independent hardware and software ecosystem.

Huawei's 2024 annual report shows that there are currently about 1 billion devices running HarmonyOS, including smartphones, wearables, smart TVs, cars, and IoT devices.

However, Huawei still faces many challenges. Expert Xu said that the company's software ecosystem is still limited, as many international applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite or Matlab do not support HarmonyOS. Currently, there are about 1,500 applications that have been optimized for this operating system.

Still, rotating chairman Meng Wanzhou pledged to continue investing heavily, saying the HarmonyOS developer community has reached 7.2 million people. Huawei plans to spend 6 billion yuan ( $835 million ) a year to support developers.
