Join hands to protect the environment
According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Thuan province, the locality owns many types of tourism such as: agriculture , health care, conference, sports, nature reserves, culture-history, ecology, trekking...
Every morning, before the sun rises, at Doi Duong-Thuong Chanh beach (Phan Thiet city), employees of the Provincial Urban Environment and Services Joint Stock Company are present to clean up.
“Most of the trash comes from the ocean. The trash is washed ashore by the waves, sometimes a few dozen kilos, sometimes up to hundreds of kilos. For many years now, we have been working from dawn to dusk so that tourists can visit and swim without seeing any trash, and to create a beautiful landscape and protect the marine environment,” an employee shared.
Considered a favorable location for green tourism , Phu Quy Island is also gradually overloaded with plastic waste. In order to reduce waste, for over a year now, high-speed boats carrying passengers have always used loudspeakers to propagate not to bring plastic waste to the island. On the island, the public information system and local people have actively promoted the protection of the marine environment to raise awareness among tourists. Thanks to that, the amount of plastic waste on the island has decreased significantly.
Not only that, clean water and electricity on the island are still lacking, so tourists also use them sparingly. Tourist Nguyen Xuan Hanh (from Dong Nai province) shared: “Each tourist who saves water and electricity is protecting the environment. We join hands to contribute a little, hoping that the island will always develop greenly and sustainably so that tourists will have the opportunity to come back next time.”
Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa, Chairman of Binh Thuan Tourism Association said: Currently, the province has a number of green tourism areas such as Muine Bay Resort, Bamboo Village Beach, Pandanus Resort, The Cliff Resort & Residences, Seahorse Resort & Spa...
Recently, Muine Bay Resort is 1/29 accommodation establishments nationwide to be awarded the VITA Green Certificate (developing green, sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism), developed by the Vietnam Tourism Association based on 100 strict criteria from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, combined with international standards on environment-social-governance.
It is noted that the green area and internal roads account for nearly 80% of the total area of 7 hectares of the resort. The resort also uses a solar power system, saving 1/3 of electricity consumption; installing a water filtration system and reusing wastewater. Disposable plastic products such as straws, containers, and packaging are replaced with biodegradable or recycled materials. In the rooms, drinking water is contained in reusable glass bottles.
Notably, some resorts have sorted waste at source. At Pandanus Resort, in addition to the solar energy system and the use of environmentally friendly products, the resort also applies microbiological technology to compost food waste into fertilizer for plants, significantly reducing the amount of waste released into the environment. For over 10 years, Pandanus Resort has always encouraged employees to spend one hour of work picking up trash together around the area.
Create mechanisms and policies
According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Thuan province, the Provincial Party Committee has issued Resolution No. 06-NQ/TU in 2021 on developing green and sustainable tourism. The province is implementing the Project to diversify types and products of Binh Thuan tourism by 2025, with a vision to 2030, which clearly shows the viewpoint of rationally and effectively using tourism resources in a sustainable manner.
In addition, the province has organized many seminars and workshops on green transformation in tourism, and organized “responsible tourism” campaigns associated with tree planting, garbage collection, and natural habitat conservation. Initially, many tourism businesses have applied renewable energy, reduced plastic waste, and built environmentally friendly accommodation models.
However, Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa acknowledged: Environmental sanitation in some places is not good. The situation of waste and wastewater in residential areas, tourist areas and beaches still occurs. Currently, green tourism is almost only called for and encouraged by the State, not really becoming specific and widespread practical activities. Green transformation still lacks detailed instructions and model models for replication. The State needs to have many policies on investment, finance, land, etc. to promote businesses to participate in developing green tourism.
Vice Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh said that currently, the province is actively developing green models in the planning of Mui Ne National Tourist Area and creating a premise for other tourist areas.
The province builds green tourism tours along the community-ecological-cultural tourism route; builds a booking system and green tourism information on a digital platform to serve tourists.
The province also invests in green transportation to serve inner-city, countryside, and island tours.
In addition, the province is perfecting institutions and support policies, building a set of criteria for "Binh Thuan Green Tourism", issuing financial incentives and technical support policies for businesses implementing green models; synchronously implementing effective solutions to respond to climate change, harmonizing resource exploitation with conservation in tourism activities; integrating environmental criteria into tourism investment planning and evaluation; building a green tourism monitoring index system to periodically evaluate businesses.
