Coach Kim Sang Sik calls up midfielder Nguyen Duc Viet to join the Vietnam U23 team

On the afternoon of June 24, Phu Dong Ninh Binh Club announced that midfielder Nguyen Duc Viet was called up to join the Vietnam U23 team in the final training session before the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.

This is likely to be a replacement for striker Nguyen Dang Duong, who could not return to the training camp on time due to his busy tour with the youth team The Cong - Viettel in Burundi. Accordingly, Dang Duong can return to Vietnam on July 2 at the earliest, while the training camp of U23 Vietnam starts on June 26 in Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

Nguyen Duc Viet was born in 2004, 1.75m tall, plays central midfielder. He grew up at Hoang Anh Gia Lai Academy, has played 3 seasons for the first team of Pho Noi football team in V-League.

In the 2024 - 2025 season, Duc Viet was loaned to Phu Dong Ninh Binh to play in the First Division, and he contributed to the club's goal of promotion to the V-League.

At the national team level, Duc Viet has played for all U20, U23 and Olympic Vietnam teams participating in Asian tournaments over the past 3 years. Most recently, Viet was one of the members of U23 Vietnam that won the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.

When joining U23 Vietnam, Duc Viet and Nguyen Van Truong (Hanoi) will be the most experienced midfielders in coach Kim Sang Sik's squad.

The early call-up of Duc Viet shows Mr. Kim's initiative in preparing the U23 Vietnam squad for the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship. The tournament will take place from July 15 to 29 in Indonesia. In the group stage, U23 Vietnam will face Laos on July 19 and Cambodia on July 22.
