Coach Shin Tae-yong: 'Indonesia lost to Iraq because of the referee'

VnExpressVnExpress16/01/2024

Qatar 's Shin Tae-yong said the referee made a mistake in allowing Iraq's second goal, contributing to Indonesia's 1-3 loss in the opening match of the 2023 Asian Cup.

"I don't know why Iraq's second goal was recognized, because there was an offside. This is unacceptable to me. This situation was 100% offside. The referee was wrong to recognize the goal, and therefore, changed the game," coach Shin said angrily at a press conference after the 1-3 loss to Iraq.

In the 7th minute of injury time in the first half, when the score was 1-1, Ali Jassim shot hard, making goalkeeper Ernando Ari unable to catch it and Osama Rashid swooped in to score the rebound. Coach Shin ran in to review the situation on Indonesia's private screen and then rushed out to ask referee Tantashev Ilgiz to consult VAR, because he thought Mohanad Ali was offside before Rashid put the ball into the net. But referee Ilgiz still recognized the goal for Iraq.

The referee's decision pushed Indonesia back into a game of chasing the score. Before that, they had coordinated a beautiful pass to let Marselino equalize in the 37th minute after Mohanad Ali opened the scoring for Iraq in the 17th minute. But even with more than 60 minutes left, Indonesia still could not turn the situation around. Not only that, they also conceded a third goal in the extra minute when Aymen Hussein beat Rizky Ridho in an aerial duel and then shot into the roof of the net, sealing the result at 3-1 for Iraq.

The 2023 Asian Cup will use semi-automatic offside detection technology. The system uses 12 specialized cameras to accurately track the position of the ball and players on the field. All body positions related to offside are identified. However, the Indonesian coach still insists that referee Ilgiz and his assistants were wrong.

Iraq leads 2-1

Iraq's goal increased the score to 2-1 against Indonesia.

"Modern technology is applied but the final decision still belongs to the referee," Mr. Shin emphasized. "The referee's mistake in recognizing this goal reduces the value of the tournament. It is a shame about that situation. It was a mistake, and it came at an important moment of the match."

After criticizing the referee, Coach Shin praised his players. He said that despite losing the match, the Indonesian players showed progress compared to the 1-5 defeat to Iraq in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers two months ago.

"In the press conference before the match, I said we would play better than in the World Cup qualifiers, and the players did that. Today, Iraq was better, but if the referee had made the right call and Indonesia had not conceded the second goal, who knows what would have happened. Iraq is strong, but Indonesia played well," he said.

The 1-3 defeat left Indonesia at the bottom of Group D, with no points but a worse goal difference than Vietnam, who lost 2-4 to Japan. The two Southeast Asian teams will face each other on January 19.

Indonesia 1-3 Iraq

Main events of the match Indonesia 1-3 Iraq.

"Losing 1-3 is a difficult result, affecting Indonesia's hopes of advancing. The next two opponents, Vietnam and Japan, are both strong. But like when I led Korea, the team defeated defending champions Germany in the 2018 World Cup group stage, something no one expected. So, Indonesia will not give up hope, we accept the challenge and move forward," added coach Shin.
