A 103-page document was recently posted to the FBI’s online archive, The Vault. The files cover preparations for several of the late Queen’s official trips to the United States, including an official visit to the West Coast with her husband, Prince Philip, in 1983.

The document details a tip that San Francisco police received about a month before the visit. The tip involved a phone call from “a man claiming that his daughter had been killed in Northern Ireland with a rubber bullet.”
“The man also stated that he would attempt to harm Queen Elizabeth by dropping something from the Golden Gate Bridge onto the Royal Yacht Britannia as it passed underneath, or would attempt to kill Queen Elizabeth while she visited Yosemite National Park,” the FBI document reads.
The documents also note that “it was the intention of the Secret Service to close the Golden Gate Bridge walkways as the cruise ship approached.” The files reveal the FBI’s heightened vigilance against possible threats to the Queen’s visit, cooperation with the U.S. Secret Service, and concerns about the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
Ahead of a private visit to Kentucky in 1989, a document noted that while the FBI was not aware of any specific threats to the Queen, “it is likely that threats against the British monarchy have always come from the Irish Republican Army (IRA).”
