On April 10, a fire broke out at the New Lucky House building on Jordan Road, Kowloon Island, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China). The fire killed at least 5 people and injured 11 others.
Images from the scene posted on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the building and scores of people waving scarves, as firefighters rushed to evacuate those trapped inside. The injured were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Kwong Wah Hospital. The Hong Kong government has opened a temporary shelter for those in need at the Henry G. Leong Yau Ma Tei Community Centre.
The fire affected traffic in the area, with sections of Jordan Road and Nathan Road blocked.
Police have not yet confirmed where the fire started. Some local media reported that the fire started in a guesthouse on the first floor of the building, while others said it started in a gym.
