Change of wind
Mr. Khang said: “My job requires me to sit in front of the computer all day, so I really want to “change the wind” by experiencing new and interesting things and relieve stress”. Together with his friends, Mr. Khang signed up for a relaxing fishing service with Mr. Vo Ngoc Bac’s fishing boat.
Fishing is a traditional occupation of many families in the Phong Hai coastal area. In the summer, when the sea is calm, like many other fishermen, every day Vo Ngoc Bac and his father and uncle go out to sea to fish and catch squid. Recently, realizing that many tourists want to experience the feeling of drifting on the sea to fish, while enjoying the fresh air of this sea, he has taken on the service of transporting passengers to experience fishing and catching squid at sea.
Mr. Bac shared: “Although the service has only been launched for more than two weeks, I have welcomed three groups of visitors to participate in this activity. In addition to providing full equipment and life jackets, I will share with visitors how to look at the sky, look at the water and experience to successfully fish and squid fish.”
With equipment including fishing rods and squid traps, Mr. Bac usually drives the boat approximately 4-5km from shore on each trip. He will instruct visitors on how to open and release the traps, as well as techniques for luring squid into the traps, how to release the rods and move rhythmically to fish.
Meal on the beach
Getting on the boat at 8am, after about ten minutes of cutting through the waves, Mr. Bac and Mr. Khang's group of guests arrived at an area of water with lots of fish and squid. From the boat looking towards the shore, the trees and villages were still clearly visible, but the water was already ten arm-lengths deep. Here, the waves were only undulating, occasionally the boat was rocked by a few big waves.
According to Mr. Bac's experience, the best harvest time of June and July is herring, mackerel, needlefish, scad, silverfish, and croaker. As for squid, the most abundant is still leaf squid. "With a trap covered by a leaf of the Dong Dinh tree, you just need to lure the squid with a bunch of eggs, and the squid will automatically enter the trap. Therefore, not only me, but many fishermen also use traps to catch squid. With only 20 traps, each fishing trip can bring in 3 - 5 kg of squid, and if you are lucky, more," he said.
After casting the net for more than an hour, Mr. Bac and the group of tourists collected the net. Luckily, Mr. Khang's group caught quite large squid. Mr. Khang was excited: "After eating squid for a long time, I never thought that one day I would witness the scene of catching squid, holding in my hands fresh squid with shiny skin like this. There were also fish, just with the fishing line and the technique that Mr. Bac showed me, I was able to catch 4-5 fish at once. This trip was really new, very fun and interesting for me."
As for Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quy, another experienced guest, the experiences from the fishermen and the echoes from the trip left the biggest impression. In particular, he also had the experience of enjoying fresh cuisine right on the boat while drifting at sea.
Mr. Quy said: “I really admire that although they are young, many fishermen here are very skilled. For me, the most interesting and unforgettable thing is enjoying seafood that I caught myself right on the boat. It is truly a very special joy and feeling.”
With the most familiar ingredients of salt and fish sauce, but with the vast sky and water scenery and hard fishing activities, a hot meal with fish and squid caught by hand has brought an irresistible attractive taste to tourists. Not only experiencing the typical work of fishermen clinging to the sea, tourists can also freely splash around with the feeling of bobbing on the waves under the glorious sunlight.
As a spontaneous but attractive tourism service, in the long term, the locality should systematically plan this experiential tourism activity. Not only will boat owners be trained in safety skills and food preparation skills, but it will also contribute to promoting and orienting fishing and squid catching services to become professional services, contributing to attracting more tourists to Phong Hai sea area.
