Complete the entire 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen line in October 2025

The 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen line was successfully energized for the first time, completed 8 months ahead of schedule compared to the original plan in the project investment policy decision approved by the Prime Minister.

At 23:12 on September 30, 2025, Vietnam Electricity Group, Power Project Management Board 1 coordinated with relevant units at the construction site to successfully energize the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500 kV Transmission Line project, completing 8 months ahead of schedule compared to the original plan according to the project investment policy decision approved by the Prime Minister.

This is the honor and pride of the entire team of engineers, staff and workers at the construction site who have made continuous efforts and overcome many difficulties and hardships, especially on complex mountainous terrain and unfavorable weather conditions during most of the construction period.

Previously, on September 29 and 30, 2025, the Lao Cai 500 kV transformer station phase 2 and the 500 kV bays at the Vinh Yen 500 kV transformer station were also successfully energized.

Speaking with Baodautu.vn, Mr. Pham Hong Phuong, Deputy General Director of EVN, said that on October 8, the project will be tested once more and will be completely completed in October 2025, including handling existing problems.

The 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line project is a national key project, with a scale of 500 kV double-circuit transmission line with a total length of 229.5 km, with a total of 468 pole foundation locations. The project passes through 02 provinces including Lao Cai and Phu Tho (formerly 04 provinces including Lao Cai, Yen Bai , Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc), with the starting point being the 500 kV Lao Cai station, the end point being the 500 kV Vinh Yen station. The total investment of the project is more than 7,410 billion VND, arranged from a loan source of the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) of 80% and counterpart capital of EVN of 20%.

In addition, the Lao Cai 500 kV Transformer Station Project Phase 2 with a total investment of more than VND 1,564 billion has also been completed with construction items and energization of the 500 kV distribution yard and 500 kV transformer to synchronize with the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500 kV transmission line project.

After being put into operation, the 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen line will be able to transmit about 3,000 MW from hydropower plants in the Northwest region and neighboring provinces to the national grid and increase the ability to import electricity. At the same time, it will create a strong connection between regions in the power system; improve the ability to operate safely and stably for the national power system; reduce power loss in the transmission grid; increase the efficiency of EVN's electricity production and business.

During construction, units have to face harsh weather conditions, complex terrain and geology.

This is one of the foundation locations requiring the largest volume of concrete construction on the entire route, with about 2,000 m3 of concrete. Because it is located on rice fields, near streams, and has weak ground, VT167 is designed as a slab foundation.

Despite many difficulties due to harsh weather conditions, many locations located on high mountains with complex terrain and geology, large volume of site clearance, urgent progress, but with high determination, great efforts of Vietnam Electricity Group, Power Project Management Board 1 and consulting units, construction contractors, equipment and material suppliers; along with close direction of the Government, Prime Minister , State Steering Committee of important national programs, works, projects, key energy sector, together with ministries, branches, localities and many organizations, officers, engineers and skilled workers reinforced from internal units in the electricity sector; the projects have been deployed urgently, synchronously, simultaneously to complete on schedule, ensuring quality.

After successfully energizing the 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line project and the 500 kV Lao Cai transformer station project along with the connecting 220 kV lines, Vietnam Electricity Group and Power Project Management Board 1 will coordinate with relevant units at the construction site to continue completing the project and related administrative procedures, aiming to put the project into operation in early October 2025, practically celebrating the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025) and welcoming the first Government Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term and the 14th National Congress of the Party.
