Security Council to vote on US Gaza ceasefire resolution

Nate Evans, a spokesman for the US mission to the United Nations, said Thursday that the resolution was the result of “multiple rounds of consultation” with members of the 15-seat Security Council.

The resolution marks a further hardening of Washington's stance towards Israel. Earlier in the five-month war, the US disliked the word 'ceasefire' and vetoed measures that included calls for an immediate ceasefire.

The draft resolution calls for an "immediate and lasting ceasefire" lasting about six weeks that would protect civilians and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The draft supports ceasefire talks brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar and emphasizes support for using the truce to intensify efforts to pursue a "lasting peace ."

To be adopted by the Security Council, a resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday he believed talks in Qatar, which are focused on a six-week ceasefire and the release of 40 Israeli hostages and hundreds of jailed Palestinians, could still produce a deal.

The main sticking point is that Hamas says it will only release hostages as part of a deal to end the war, while Israel says it will only discuss a pause in the fighting.

The United States wants any Security Council support for a ceasefire to be linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

According to Gaza health authorities, the Israeli offensive has killed nearly 32,000 Palestinians.

The resolution also aims to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, where famine is worsening.

During the Gaza conflict, Washington has vetoed three draft resolutions, including two that called for an immediate ceasefire. Most recently, the US justified its veto by saying that such a move by the council could jeopardize ceasefire negotiations.
