( Bqp.vn ) – On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Nong Son – Thuong Duc Victory (1974 – 2024), on the morning of July 16, in Hanoi, the Institute of Military History (General Staff) organized a scientific workshop “The Nong Son – Thuong Duc Victory – Looking Back Half a Century”. Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, Secretary of the Party Committee of the General Staff – Ministry of National Defense attended and delivered a speech.
Attending the workshop were Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Deputy Minister of National Defense, and historical witness.
Major General Nguyen Hoang Nhien delivered the opening speech at the workshop.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Major General Nguyen Hoang Nhien, Director of the Institute of Military History, affirmed that half a century ago, units of the main Division 2 (Military Region 5), Division 304, Division 324 (Army Corps 2) coordinated with the armed forces and the people in the current Quang Nam province to launch the Nong Son - Thuong Duc Campaign and won a glorious victory. Promoting the strength of the people's war posture, the intelligence and mettle of the revolutionary army, after nearly 40 days and nights of steadfast fighting, the forces participating in the campaign fought bravely, were creative in implementing the campaign, successfully completed the set goals, smashed the enemy's important defense area, and created new momentum and strength for the revolution in the South.

The victory of Nong Son - Thuong Duc affirmed the correct and sharp leadership of the Central Military Commission and the General Staff, and at the same time clearly reflected the remarkable maturity of the main force and armed forces on the battlefield of Zone 5 in combined arms operations; contributing to the bankruptcy of the "pacification and encroachment plan" and the plot to "flood the territory" of the puppet army and puppet government of Saigon.
The Organizing Committee of the conference received nearly 60 presentations from generals; leaders and commanders of a number of agencies and units under the Ministry of National Defense; historical witnesses, scientists inside and outside the Army. The conference focused on clarifying and affirming the Party's guidelines, policies, and correct and wise leadership as the decisive factor in the victory of the resistance war against the US, saving the country in general, and in the 1974 Nong Son - Thuong Duc Campaign in particular. Analyzing and deepening the art of directing, organizing and operating the campaign; especially promoting the role of the people's war posture, the strength of great national unity, creating great strength to make the Nong Son - Thuong Duc Victory. Clarifying the role of local Party committees; the close coordination and cooperation between the main force and the three-service armed forces in the area... At the same time, clarifying the development of Vietnamese military art in the Campaign to apply and promote it in the current cause of defending the Fatherland.

Speaking at the conference, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan emphasized that the Nong Son - Thuong Duc victory left many valuable lessons. These were lessons in assessing and forecasting the situation correctly, in promoting the strength of the great national unity bloc, in conducting a comprehensive people's war; in promoting patriotism, the will to fight and win, independence, self-reliance, self-reliance, and self-strengthening of our entire Party, army, and people; and in applying unique military art to battlefield realities.
This scientific conference is one of the activities with profound theoretical and practical significance. The presentations and opinions at the conference will contribute to supplementing information and documents to continue affirming and deepening the significance of the victory in the process of resistance war against the US, saving the country in particular and the Vietnamese revolution in general; analyzing and clarifying the basic factors that made the victory of Nong Son - Thuong Duc. In addition, the conference is an opportunity to honor and express gratitude for the contributions of cadres, soldiers, and people of all walks of life who made the victory; educating revolutionary ideals, patriotic traditions, national pride and self-respect; encouraging, motivating, and motivating people of all walks of life, especially the young generation, to follow the example of their fathers and grandfathers, to strive to study, work, and contribute their strength and intelligence to build their homeland and country; at the same time, drawing valuable experiences for the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.

The Nong Son - Thuong Duc victory will forever be the pride of the Vietnamese people.

Presenting the conference introduction, Colonel Le Thanh Bai, Deputy Director of the Institute of Military History, affirmed that 50 years have passed but the historical significance of the Nong Son - Thuong Duc Victory remains valuable, a great source of encouragement for the Vietnamese army and people in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland. Based on reliable sources of documents, with an objective and scientific spirit, Colonel Le Thanh Bai suggested that delegates focus on explaining and deepening a number of issues, notably analyzing and clarifying the international, domestic and local context; the preparation and implementation of the Campaign, emphasizing the work of organizing, arranging, ensuring logistics and techniques; the role of the main force and forces in the Campaign area.

As a historical witness in the Campaign, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh, former Deputy Commander of Regiment 3 (Division 324) - who directly commanded the unit to fight to victory and together with the forces organized to counterattack the enemy to hold Thuong Duc, assessed that the Nong Son - Thuong Duc victory not only opened the "steel door" to protect the West of Da Nang but also had strategic significance; creating a position and force for the following important campaigns. This victory created a comparison between our mobile main force and the strategic mobile main force of the Saigon army at that time, making an important contribution to the Southern battlefield...
