Today (5/5 - Lunar calendar), is the Duanwu Festival (also known by the rather popular name of "Insect Killing Festival"). Duanwu Festival is considered one of the most important holidays of the year for Vietnamese people. Simply put, this is the day to launch the catching of insects, destroying pests that are harmful to crops.

The Duanwu Festival takes place on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month every year. In 2024, it will be on Monday, June 10.
“Doan” means beginning, “Ngo” is the time from 11am-1pm, eating Tet Doan Ngo is eating at noon. Doan Ngo means the time when the Sun starts to be shortest, closest to the sky and earth.
Offering tray for Dragon Boat Festival
Depending on the region, the offerings for the Duanwu Festival have a few different details. The offerings on this day in the North often include fruits, fresh flowers and some typical offerings during the summer solstice such as: lychee, plum, sticky rice, banh gio, and sticky rice wine.
In the Central region, in addition to incense, flowers, rice wine, water, and fruits, duck meat is indispensable. In the Southern region, sweet rice balls are indispensable on the offering tray.
