Important step to elevate Vietnam's equestrian industry

Experts assessed that the hot and humid climate in Vietnam poses many challenges in the care and training of sport horses. Therefore, the workshop analyzed the underlying causes of common diseases, and proposed practical solutions to improve the quality of care and training of horses in special weather conditions.

Veteran expert Sergio Manuel Alonso Sanchez (Spain), who has worked in the sport horse industry for 37 years and trained trainers for 28 years, said that tropical climate conditions are very different. Therefore, to minimize injuries and improve competition efficiency, trainers need to develop special training programs, alternating high-intensity and recovery exercises to prevent horses from getting heatstroke. However, these exercises must be maintained regularly to ensure the horse's adaptation to the climate. The leading expert also introduced horse cooling techniques and how to detect signs of heatstroke in horses through breathing, heart rate and body temperature measurement.

Present at the workshop, Mr. Donny Tey - CEO of Viet Horse - pointed out common problems in designing horse rations in Asia. He warned that feeding horses too much starch or nutritional imbalance leads to digestive diseases and reduced resistance. In addition, the expert emphasized that horses chew continuously throughout the day to maintain the salivation mechanism, which is very important to ensure the health of the horse's stomach.

Horse hoof expert Man Bahadur Thapa (Nepal) noted: “The horse’s hoof is the main part that bears the force and absorbs shock during movement, so it needs to be carefully cared for. Choosing the right hoof to ensure balance is the foundation for maintaining and increasing the performance of sport horses. In addition, signs of damage need to be detected and treated early to prevent serious diseases such as laminitis and cracked hoofs.”

Meanwhile, the topic of diseases typical of hot and humid environments is also of interest to hundreds of experts, trainers, and scientists in the field of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry. Dr. Hélène AMORY, Lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liege (Belgium) pointed out: “Many people often do not pay attention to regular brushing of horses. However, this is both a relaxing activity and a method to prevent injuries from the saddle, remove sweat and moisture, and reduce bacteria that cause dermatitis, skin fungus, and hair loss.” She also introduced new techniques to check for skin and hair diseases and how to treat some typical skin diseases of tropical climates.

Dr. Dam Van Phai assessed that the tropical climate creates favorable conditions for blood parasites to cause dangerous symptoms such as edema, weight loss, miscarriage, and even death. Dr. Phai emphasized: "Strict screening before entering the herd is the most effective solution to control blood parasites/bacteremia."
