The workshop attracted nearly 200 domestic and foreign delegates, marking an important step forward in updating and applying advanced ECMO techniques in emergency care for patients with critical respiratory and heart failure.
Taking place from March 12 to 14, the workshop included many in-depth topics such as ECMO monitoring and management, complication prevention, treatment of right ventricular dysfunction, support for heart failure treatment and ECMO ventilator weaning procedures. Experts from Mayo Clinic directly shared practical experiences and provided practice guidelines according to international standards.
Professor, Dr. Pramod Kumar Guru, Director of Adult ECMO Practice at Mayo Clinic Hospital, emphasized: “The workshop is an opportunity for the medical team to access the latest advances, practice techniques according to international standards and improve the ability to treat critically ill patients.”
Dr. Le Duc Nhan, Director of Da Nang Hospital, said that ECMO is an advanced medical technology that has saved the lives of millions of patients with severe respiratory and heart failure. However, to effectively deploy ECMO, the medical team needs to continuously research, learn and receive support from the world's leading experts.
Since 2017, Da Nang Hospital has deployed ECMO, becoming the 675th unit in the world to successfully perform this technique. To date, the hospital has performed more than 300 ECMO cases, an average of more than 50 cases per year, saving the lives of many patients in critical conditions that seemed hopeless.
In 2023, Da Nang Hospital and Mayo Clinic signed a cooperation agreement for professional support. Within the framework of cooperation, Mayo Clinic doctors and experts have directly worked, transferred techniques, shared in-depth experiences and provided practical guidance to the medical team in Da Nang.
Dr. Le Duc Nhan affirmed: “This is a clear demonstration of international cooperation in improving the quality of treatment and health care. Mayo Clinic experts not only help us improve our expertise but also promote the development of ECMO in Da Nang and neighboring areas.”
Expanding cooperation with world-leading medical centers such as Mayo Clinic contributes to improving the professional capacity of medical staff, opening up opportunities to access modern medical advances. Thereby, helping to improve the quality of emergency care and treatment of critically ill patients in Vietnam.
