In June, walking along some roads in Duong Hoa commune (Huong Thuy town), it is easy to see that, next to the pomelo branches laden with fruit, there are quite a few traders from many places discussing and negotiating with garden owners about prices and about purchasing the whole garden...
Mr. Nguyen Vinh (Buong Tam village) said: "This year's pomelo output is not equal to 2022, but in return, the fruit is big, beautiful, and has green skin, which means the fruit quality is better and will sell for a higher price."
According to statistics, the entire Duong Hoa commune currently grows 75 hectares of pomelos, of which about 30 hectares are in the harvest period. With an increasingly expanding scale (in 2022, the total pomelo area will be about 59 hectares), it has shown that pomelos have become a key crop, bringing high and stable income to farmers here.
With bold investment and application of scientific and technological advances, over the past years, most pomelo growers in Duong Hoa commune are no longer in a situation of “relying on the heavens”. Not only being proactive in care and harvesting, pomelo growers here also aim to expand the scale and improve the quality of this specialty fruit.
“In addition to coordinating with specialized agencies to organize many training courses to guide people on proper planting and care, the commune government and the Commune Farmers’ Association also regularly disseminate care plans to members and local people, closely monitor the situation of pests, weather, etc. to have timely response and remedial measures. With very promising fruit quality, we are currently advising garden owners not to harvest early or sell early to avoid losing value,” said Mr. Nguyen Cuu Tuan - Chairman of the Duong Hoa Commune Farmers’ Association.
According to Mr. Le Van Thuc - Chairman of Duong Hoa Commune People's Committee, it is expected that next August, Duong Hoa pomelo will be granted "Geographical Indication". This, on the one hand, affirms the quality and enhances the brand, on the other hand, becomes a great motivation for pomelo growers here to continue investing, expanding the scale, and improving the quality of this specialty fruit in this land.
