Co To Island District, Quang Ninh Province, has gone through a challenging 30-year journey of construction and development since its establishment.
Co To is a strategically important island district located in the northeast of Quang Ninh province, established by Government Decree No. 28/CP dated March 23, 1994. The district has a land area of over 53.68 km2 with 74 islands and a sea area and fishing grounds of over 300 km2.
Throughout the country's history, with its exceptionally important geostrategic location, Co To has become a "frontier," playing a crucial strategic role in the defense posture, serving as an outpost, a stronghold, a multi-layered steel shield, and a protective barrier for the northern gateway of the Fatherland.
On May 9, 1961, the people and soldiers of Co To Island had the honor of welcoming President Ho Chi Minh on a visit. This is also the only locality in the country where President Ho Chi Minh agreed to have a statue of him erected during his lifetime .
